Intermittent A/V for A550 connected to Sony STRDG820

Jan 6, 2009 10:54AM PST

Symptoms:
Audio ceases and screen goes black for approximately 1-2 seconds; time/resolution dialog boxes appear (appears to be renegotiating the HDMI signal). The interval when the symptoms occur isn't constant. It occurs both when playing content and when content is paused. The same problem appears on both LN40A550 and LN52A550 TVs BUT ONLY IF connected to the Sony STRDG820 receiver. I have not noticed the problem when the PS3/STB/AppleTV are directly connected to the A550.

Connected Devices:
Samsung LN40A550 or LN52A550 TV (upgraded to 1006 firmware version; doesn't matter)
Sony STRDG820 receiver
Sony Playstation 3
AppleTV
Motorola DCH3416 DVR (Comcast)
Only HDMI connections are used.

Any ideas?

Thanks,
Mike

Anynet?
Jan 13, 2009 5:04PM PST

Mike,

Thanks for your patience. This last week was busy, as I was in meetings, at the Int'l Consumer Electronics Show, and ramping up for 2009. I apologize for the delay in the response, and hope to get my response level back down to the 24-hour timeframe that I normally shoot for.

Do you have Anynet+ enabled that might be sending a signal that conflicts with the STRDG820? I'm also curious to know what flavor of HDMI that might support. I'm thinking HDMI incompatibility; do you have any leanings or initial hypthesis?

Same here: Sony STRDG820 intermittent picture/sound
Mar 6, 2009 2:13AM PST

I have the same problem, and I'm curious what the resolution was of this case.
I've got a Tivo HD, Xbox 360 and Apple TV all connected by HDMI to a Sony STR-DG820 which is connected by HDMI to a Samsung LN40A550.
On both the Tivo and Xbox picture and sound cut out for about a second occassionally, but it never happens on the Apple TV. I do nnot use Anynet. Since this never happened when I had the devices connected directly to the LN40A550, I figure it is a Sony problem, and I'm talking to Sony customer support and hope that they will take the unit back for repair or replacement. But I just wondered what happened in Mike's case. I figure this is some kind of HDMI incompatibility, but the Sony says it does HDMI 1.3a.

Thanks,
-John

HDCP?

jvhii,

The best I can speculate would be that it's either an HDMI issue, or the resolution or feed experiences a hang up in the actual receiver. Naturally, I can't speak for Sony products, but I'm not sure if there's a fix.

Intermittent connection caused by changing input selector
Apr 28, 2009 9:42AM PDT

An update:

I sent the receiver back to Sony's repair center. They couldn't duplicate the problem. Their Tier 2 team also attempted to assist and couldn't duplicate the problem.

I finally localized the problem: the problem always manifests itself after the unit is powered on and the HDMI source is changed but does not manifest itself (1) if the input selector isn?t changed or (2) if the TV is plugged directly into a peripheral device such as a Sony Playstation 3, AppleTV, or Comcast Motorola DCH3416 DVR. I have duplicated the problem on two different Samsung A550 class TVs, both with the latest firmware. I have replaced all HDMI cables.

I escalated within Sony and they ultimately were kind enough to replace the receiver with an new STRDG820.

Unfortunately, the problem persists on the new, replacement STRDG820. All I can do is change the input and power cycle the receiver to prevent the problem from manifesting.
