Interesting bug!

Nov 12, 2007 7:05PM PST

Real-time activity points to a reply on a post. Clicking on it gives page not found error. Looking at the original post only gives the original post without any replies. Makes me hesitate to reply at the moment.

Are these replies gone forever? Or are they just hiding until an engineer recovers them?

An example:
Original post: http://forums.cnet.com/5208-6035_102-0.html?forumID=5&threadID=271632&tag=incmng (now showing as 1/1)
Reply by Pudgyone: http://forums.cnet.com/5208-6035_102-0.html?forumID=5&threadID=271632&messageID=2628581&tag=incmng#2628581 (link from real-time activity, now giving page not found)

Kees,

It seems to be the top post. Want to see something stranger, wait for the next new post and click on the subject on the top post, You'll get page not found, now click on the back button and what do you get?

When I did it, the new post was gone and the post beneath t was on top again.

Kees, these things
Nov 12, 2007 7:33PM PST

are only happening when using Mozilla Firefox 2.0.0.9

If I use Internet Explorer 6 things are ok.

If I use IE Tab and then click on the top post, when I hit the back button, it still makes the post disappear and brings up old posts.

I'm getting this when I click a reply in my profile page.

I actually came here right now to make a post about it. It's been happening for a few days now (the page not found) and has got gradually worse.

Perhaps CNET are doing some upgrades they didn't tell us about.

I hear you... all kinds of bugs crawling everywhere ;)

First began noticing these malfunctions with missing post today. Using Firefox 2.0.0.9... not tested with IE7 as I do not use that browser.

Maybe CNet caught a virus! Wink

Working for the moment.

Can link from Windows Mail to Cnet.
All posts showing again.
Can move around the site freely.
Can create text responces at will.

Just hope the bugs within the text reply window go away as well.

Only time will tell.

Is this still happening?
Nov 13, 2007 1:49AM PST

Just checked and it looks fine.

Of the late we've been having issue with the forum servers. When you see issues like this or issues where you can see only 1 post yet it displays 1 of 3, this is usually because one of the server has gone down. During this time you will get occassional "Page not founds" because data written to that server hasn't fully recovered. Typically under normal circumstances the server usually reboot itself and recovers, but of the late we've had to manually reboot the servers as they never fix themselves. We are looking into this issue in hopes to fixing this issue soon.

Thanks!

Happening to me too.
Nov 13, 2007 6:03AM PST

I just thought I'd add my two cents to confirm something. I was going to create my own thread here until I saw it's not just me this is happening to, so I feel better about that. For me, it started yesterday and I thought maybe posts were getting deleted by admin, but that doesn't make any sense that so many are disappearing. The page will say "Total posts: 6", but only 3 are visible and "Post 3 of 6" being the last visible post. Sometimes, when opening a link to the latest post in an email message will open to a page that says something to that effect that page wasn't found. Now, I can't even see some of my own posts in these threads. I don't even know if I will be able to see this post I'm writing now.

I do want to reassure that this isn't happening with just Firefox. I use Avant Browser.

I hope this gets fixed soon.

I am seeing different posts and numbers of posts

when switching between FF and IE7. I have my system set to dump cache on exit so that's not the cause. There are several examples in SE.

Even this thread

currently shows 14 posts when viewing with FF and 5 when using IE7.

Hey, Lee...
Nov 13, 2007 9:38AM PST

To give you an idea, I've had this page on auto-refresh every 20 minutes and just now finally saw this post appear. Before that I was able to see just 3 of the reported 14 posts. I guess it's a good sign that suddenly every forum has been populated with posts from this morning, but won't count my chickens just yet.

Ok to give away some secrets
Nov 14, 2007 6:33AM PST

Because I was seeing different posts and post counts depending on which browser I was using, does Cnet have servers that can detect which browser knocks on the door and dress up before answering? Happy
