Intel shoots it's self in the foot.

Feb 3, 2004 12:55PM PST

The new Pentium 4 Prescott is a real disappointment. They claim lengthen the pipe so it will scale better. What good is it? It just kills the performance. They should have just went with the other changes like more cache and 90 nm die and other fine tuning. The Pentium 4 Extreme Edition based on the Northwood core looks good except for the price. Intel is nuts with the price of The Pentium 4 Extreme Edition. What do you think? http://www.tomshardware.com/cpu/20040201/index.html

I think they had to make this move.

The move to 90nm and what we don't know about the chip is going to tell.

There's some speculation if 64-bit is being tested in the chip.

Taking this step by itself may seem dumb to some, but I ask if you remember the same was said about the first P4s.

"Taking this step by itself may seem dumb to some, but I ask if you remember the same was said about the first P4s." That is true, but look how long did it take Intel to gain performance. I believe this could have been done without the longer pipe. I think Intel is rushing it. What is strange is there is a Northwood 3.4GHZ but no Prescott 3.4GHZ only a 3.2GHZ. If the longer pipe makes it easier for scaling why is there no 3.4GHZ Prescott? Lets look at the pipe line. Pentium!!! 10, Pentium 4 up to Northwood 20, Prescott 31. WOW! AMD 18. So far it doesn't look like they compensated enough for the longer pipe. Only time will tell how Intel will compensate for the longer pipe.

It boils down that Intel had to have something to compete against the new AMD offering and the P4ex was it. Hey, think of it as the "gap filler" until something better comes along. -----Willy
