Intel 1156 - Should I Build?

Feb 2, 2013 1:32PM PST

Dear Forum,

About 2 years ago I purchased an Intel I5-750 and a Gigabyte 1156 MB with the intention of replacing my Intel Core2 Duo/LG775 desktop. My job commitments pushed the build way down in priority. Now my LG775 system is so long in the tooth that it is having a negative impact on my projects.

Since Socket 1156 is obsolete, I have second thoughts about building a system. Socket 1155 offers many attractive options, and socket 2011 is already here. What would you do? Thanks for helping me decide.

Since you already have the I5 and the mobo it seems a shame to bin it.
The 750 will give you quite a bump in cpu power.
Is there some must have feature from newer tech?

Bob,

Your response convinced me to do the build with LGA1156 components. I will increase memory from 8 GB to 16 GB and add a late model 240 GB SSD for system ("C") drive. Once stable, I will do a modest overclock by increasing the FSB frequency. Besides, that's the only overclock option available. Except for hyper threading - I development scientific apps. - there are no other compelling reasons for newer tech. Thanks for your advice.
