Integration of social features

Have you noticed that even some simplistic weather checking apps include social features as well?(As if your friends can't even check the weather of their own locations for themselves)

What might be the purpose of this (usually redundant) additional feature on the provider's end?To publicize it better is my guess? Or what type of an app/service can it be able to turn into?

(I know, I *am* really bored these days, looking ways to look into the app creating industry in such a unprofessional way)
