Insufficient memory message with Notepad!!!

Sep 23, 2005 12:26AM PDT

I have a 5-year old Evesham PC (with upgraded 512 Mb Crucial RAM, 1.1 GHz processor and a half-full 40 Gb disk. It's running Windows ME and, though it can be a bit erratic at times, it has generally been very stable and reliable for many months.

The only persistent annoying problem is its tendency to misbehave with Notepad, surely one of the least demanding applications on the PC! When trying to copy even small amounts of text into an existing file, I often get the following error message: "Not enough memory available to complete this operation." More demanding programs such as Access, Dreamweaver, Excel and Word all work normally. The Notepad malfunction seems to occur randomly and I cannot link it to any other open application causing a conflict. Even with all other applications closed, once this anomaly has occurred, it continues to occur and I can solve it only by rebooting.

Has anyone any suggestions?

Regards
John

You're not the only one.

http://www.google.com/search?&q=notepad+%22Not+enough+memory+available+to+complete+this+operation.%22 gives 147 hits, and I didn't yet try the discussion groups.

The first, with me, was MSKB article limited to Windows 2000. But the second (http://zotline.com/shownote.zot/NoteNum/2504.html) seems to be about the same as you (on Windows 95).

If you find any solution in one of the other hits or in the discussion groups, it would be interesting to read it here.

For the moment, it's just one of those glitches that a reboot solves. That means that something unknown has happened since the last boot causing just that condition that Notepad doesn't like somewhere in the system. It might be impossible to find out, and it certainly can be hard.

The workaround presented in the last line of the link given (use Wordpad) might be the best for you.

Or use Notepad+ (a free Notepad replacement) from http://www.mypeecee.org/rogsoft/
I use it routinely for website maintenance, and I particularly love the 15 open windows and the File>Reopen. Very nice, very reliable. Note the installation procedure carefully if you want it to really replace Microsofts Notepad (and make a backup copy of that program to start with, of course).

Somewhat less basic, but free also, is Editpad Lite from http://www.editpadlite.com/editpadlite.html
If your editing is more demanding, you can pay for a more powerful Pro version, but depending on your use there are other paid editors that might be better suited for you (like editors that 'know' programming languages and add color to the syntax) if you are a programmer or a html-editor if you use it for a html.

You don't tell for what purposes you use Notepad, but I get the impression you do it more or less regularly. Then I should certainly advice to you try these alternatives, be it for their added functionality or simply because they work without glitches. But, as I said, a paid alternative might be even better for you.

Hope this helps.

Thanks for info

Many thanks for your comprehensive reply seen only today, which I need to reflect on. I use Notepad for simple data storage and for quick and simple editing of HTML and ASPX files when I don't want/need to launch Dreamweaver or Web Matrix ASP.NET respectively.

You might check out #6 at burzurq.com

BTW, although some sources indicate that Windows ME can handle up to 1GB to 3GB of RAM, it has been my experience and that of some other users that the max RAM ME can safely deal with is 384MB. Rather than removing RAM you may be able to reduce the amount of RAM recognized using the System Configuration Utility. Start > Run > type in MSCONFIG and click OK. On the System Tab reduce the #MB of RAM then restart the computer. Repeat until the problem nolonger presents it's self.

Hope this helps. But it seems that not all ME's are equal.

512MB was the limit.

Any more than that would cause problems.

Memory limitation, Win ME

Yes, that's what I had always thought and it seems to be so as I don't have any error messages or memory problems other than the previously described Notepad anomaly.

Memory problems
Oct 3, 2005 8:32PM PDT

Thanks for the suggestion but it seems overly drastic in my case as generally there isn't a memory problem, only the mentioned occasional Notepad anomaly.

After I upgraded from the original 256 Mb to faster 512 Mb RAM some years ago, I saw a distinct speed improvement and less hanging and crashing.

Resources.

The 9x series was horrible with resource management.

Programs that were closed were supposed to release the resources they used, but not always worked that way, thus it was known as a resource leak.

Although system resources was a small portion of system memory, it was a fixed amount, and would not increase as more memory was added.

Once resources drop low enough, you get the same error message about insufficient memory. Rebooting is the only fix at this point.

Yes, agreed, though fortunately I don't often have to reboot to cure that problem.
