But this sounds like abuse of a word processor. That is you are attempting to do formatted data entry with a word document. Shouldn't this be some "application" that you fill in the blanks and a "report" is generated to your formatting rules?
Even if you wish to continue with this WP method why not upgrade your document with a macro that corrects this formatting?
If you really want to know what's going on, turn on the reveal codes and watch the formatting changes or style of each entry.
-> Let me be clear about this. Word is not busted here, just misunderstood.

Hi all
I hope you can help, I have tables in a document which has small cell in to allow only 14 characters to be typed.
If the cell has a return in and you are typing on the 2nd line the formatting of the text stays at the format allocated, however if the cell is just a single line, as soon as I start typing text it changes from normal (format) to normal - expanded 61.51pt.
I have checked all the cell sizes and formatting etc and they are exactly the same, its just as soon as I start typing in the single row cell it changes.
I hope someone can help as it is causing real problems for the end users of the document
