Installing Windows 7 over Vista on Insipron 1525

Sep 1, 2009 6:21AM PDT

My girlfriend wants to install a corporate edition of Windows 7 over Vista on her laptop. Is there anything that would prevent her formatting the HDD and installing Win 7? Something in the BIOS?

Thanks.

P.S. Maybe it isn't a corporate edition, possibly RTM, not that its important.

http://www.gadgetell.com/tech/comment/official-windows-7-upgrade-chart-now-available-from-microsoft/ contains the official Windows 7 upgrade chart. It shows there is no corporate edition. There's a home premium, a professional and an ultimate.

So once you know what it is, and what her current Vista edition is, you can determine if she can do a upgrade (over her existing Vista installation) or must do a clean ("custom") install.

With a clean install she might need the Windows 7 compatible drivers (most Vista ones would be fine, but I don't think Dell already guarantees that). An upgrade should work without reinstalling the drivers (although the same goes for what Dell would say officially). If no answer from a Dell person comes here, contact Dell tech support for that.

Thanks for the reply.

She asked technical support when enquiring about another issue and they didn't give a clear answer. The guy was more intersted in getting her to extend her warranty for

Most likely, the Vista drivers from the Dell CD will work. But you never now, it's a cd Dell composed and all it might do is tell you don't run Vista so you can't use it.

So try an upgrade install, if possible. If it isn't possible after all, be prepared to go back to Vista if unexpected problems arise.

I think the Dell tech support in this case was below standards.
