Installing Ubuntu

Sep 22, 2005 11:33AM PDT

I have a 20gb harddrive with Windows ME and Suse 9.3
This drive is almost full

I want to install a slave harddrive and load Ubuntu.I have run the live cd and now want the full install.

My question is how will I start Ubuntu from the slave

With ME and Suse I have grub boot manager to select those os's

Thanks
Ray

Tampa

Sorry for the long delay but Hurricane Rita headed towards this neighborhood and caused my ISP to leave town
After Rita moved in it caused heavy damage to the electrical transmission system
We were out of power for 6 days 22 hours and 40 minutes.

What I would like to do is have 3 os,s on my computer
I have Windows ME and Suse 9.3 on 1 harddrive duet booting with grub.
I want to fresh install Ubuntu on a second harddrive and run it from that drive Is this possible

When installed on second harddrive how would I start it
Would I have to use windows and start like a browser?
I am asking can this be done?

Thanks
Ray

I think it can be done.

If Ubuntu uses grub as the boot manager, and I think it does, and if during the install you have an option of where to install the bootloader, and again, I imagine you will be given this option. You should be able to install the bootloader to the boot partition of the Ubuntu drive (you don't want to install it to the Windows mbr as is the default option with some distros). Then, you can easily add Ubuntu to your existing SUSE grub menu. Here is how: bring up YAST/system/bootloader configuration, you will see a "reset" button, click on it and choose "propose and merge with existing grub menus" it will find and add Ubuntu as a boot option. Hope this helps - Gary

Gary

Thanks for the info

According to Ubuntu either Grub or Lilo boot managers will work

Found info in Suse 9.3 to change grub boot loader to multiple os's as per your instructions.

With this info I will purchase and install harddrive and Ubuntu

Thanks again for the info it really helped
