Keep locking up in the middle of installation at expanding files.
AMD quad, ASUS M4A785-M with 8 meg system mem and new 450 W power supply.

That's some hardware issue.

Things to try:
1. Remove all hardware unnecessary during the install.
2. Try a Linux install.

Newly built computer locked out and reboot spontaneusly

After several attemts to make a workable Ubuntu.iso, it booted up alright but not fully. Rebooted by itself in the middle.
Is there any perculiarities in AMD 64bit cpu?

My answer is no.

To me this sounds like a hardware issue. While I don't see the rest of the system that 8 GB RAM seems to give folk grief as most don't buy the recommended sticks and some won't update the BIOS which may offer support for their sticks.

Try this -> Use one stick of ram.

Any way to acivate and take advantage of 4 cores of cpu?
Your experiences of ubuntu, if any?

I am very grateful to you. You made me happy.

Research if folk are reporting issues with this board and if there is a new BIOS.

For example one maker had to update the BIOS to slow down the memory bus just a little when all slots were filled.
