Installing Nero 7 on Vista requires DirectX 9.0c. Is this OK

Jun 9, 2007 2:05AM PDT

SPECS:
Acer Ferrari series
Vista Ultimate
AMD Turion 64 X2
ATI X1600 graphics card
2 GB memory

DirectX 9.0c is a minimum requirement which must be installed first before installing nero 7. This message occurs during the nero installation process where the End-User Runtime will update your current version of DirectX if you choose to go forward with it.

Vista is pre-installed with DirectX 10. I have read that If you install nero 7 and hence DirectX 9.0c, the DirectX version still remains 10 when you run "dxdiag".

I have gone one week strong since i have Vista but i do not want to encounter any problems whatsoever if I can help it.

My video card doesn't support DirectX 9.0c so i guess then my gaming won't be affected.

If i continue with install, will it have ANY effect on my system? Can i go ahead?

I need a good burning program and i love Nero but do not want Roxio.

CD or Download?
Jun 9, 2007 3:56AM PDT

I have Nero 7 ultra on my Vista home premium computer and don't recall seeing that message.
I downloaded the Nero clean tool, ran that and then downloaded the latest version off the Nero site and haven't had any problems.
The latest version is 7.9.6.0 and fixes a lot of earlier problems that people were having with Vista.
As for the direct X, I think it uses the latest version so that should not effect your machine.
If your are using a CD for installation, make sure it is one of the latest that says Vista compatable. A friend of mine picked up a copy at Best buy that wasn't and ended up downloading the clean tool and then the program anyway.
I agree with you on not wanting Roxio as it causes too many problems with half the features of Nero.

Nero 7.8.5.0 and changes i made to machine
Jun 9, 2007 4:27AM PDT

Well it seems i shouldn't install nero unless i have a later version that probably have fixed Vista flaws. This version is a couple months old. I'll go get the latest and see if this message doesn't appear then.

My version is the problem because it couldn't be anything else really. As i said its a new computer and i haven't done much to it in terms of installing programs etc.

I have installed steam, counter-strike, DivX Codec (bundle), Cyberlink PowerDVD, WinRAR, and thats about it other than just like regular files. Norton Internet Security 2006 came as a trial. Windows was updated but i won't install the Dreamscene or Bitlocker thing cause its optional and i don't need it or want to find out just for fun.

Only other problem i have is NIS 2006 LiveUpdate isn't working even after i reinstalled. I fixed my networking issues from helpful members on other cnet posts.

Thanks for your time and also to Cnet

Same problem here!!!
Jun 11, 2007 5:30PM PDT

I have exatly the same problem as you. I've checked the Nero web site and say they have an enhanced version that works with Vista.

That's not true as I've downloaded the most updated trial version 7.9.6 and the DirectX problem is still there.

When deselecting the DX9c option on the installer the next button is deactivated and don't allow to install without selecting DirectX9.

I don't want to screew my Vista OS installing an older version of DX.

Nero 7.9.6.0 also gives the same response
Jun 16, 2007 12:44PM PDT

It still asks me to update DirectX 9.0c from DirectX 10.

So i have confirmed that it does not work as well. It probably works for some Vista users because they already have DirectX 9.0c installed (as well as DirectX 10, maybe?).

I hope someone can help us out further. I guess i will try contact nero.

Try this download...
Jun 16, 2007 12:52PM PDT

I have Nero 7.9.6.0 (website download) successfully installed and running on Vista x86 and never received that error. The installer is supposed to detect DirectX 10 as being a newer version and proceed as it did for me, but since it didn't I'd suggest clicking here to download the DirectX Runtime installer, which you'll note is designed for Windows 2000, XP, and Vista. After it's done reboot and try installing Nero again.

Hope this helps,
John

Solution?
Jun 16, 2007 1:03PM PDT

"DirectX 10 is not an upgrade of DirectX 9, it is a completely different version and many parts of DirectX 9 are not included in DirectX 10. Therefore most DirectX 9 applications such as Nero won't work with only DirectX 10 installed.

The installation of DirectX 9 won't overwrite any DirectX 10 files, so it is safe to let Nero install the DirectX 9 files. Only files that are not installed or installed in an older version will be updated during a typical DirectX installation. "

I have heard this twice now and believe it to be safe BUT i have not tried this for confirmation. I will try this OR John's suggestion. Hmmm?

Nero Install on Windows Vista Working
Jun 17, 2007 1:45AM PDT

Thanks John and MrFletch.

I was having the same issue about not wanting to "upgrade" my DirectX to 9.0c from 10.0 on Windows Vista in order to get Nero to install.

And I believe that both of you are correct. I used the link to the MS DirectX web setup from John and it installed the necessary files for the 9.0c version and has still left the 10.0 install intact as per the DirectX Diagnostic (type dxdiag in a run command box) program.

Nero 7.9.6.0 update from the Nero Website (http://www.nero.com/nero7/enu/nero7-up.php) installed without problems. I, of course, only installed the Nero Burning ROM out of that entire list of programs that I do not need and consider bloatware. (I remember when you were able to get a powerful burning program with a small footprint without the circus of installing other "apps.")

Thanks again for all of your help.
