General discussion

installing iTunes

Mar 6, 2007 11:56PM PST

I have Windows Vista on my computer. I downloaded the iTunes 7.1, but when I went to install it, it said that VBScript is not installed, and I need to install that in order to install iTunes. Can anyone point me to just "how" I would go about installing VBScript on my system. I think It could be some $#$% security setting that Vista locks down the VBScript, so if that is the case how I go about enabling it for the iTunes install. or any other procedure to install iTunes

Any help would be appreciated.
thank you

iTunes is not yet Vista compatible...
Mar 7, 2007 1:44AM PST

Apple has made a great deal of progress, but iTunes still bugs out on people at random points while running on Vista, so even the latest version is not fully compatible. My suggestion would be to just give them a little time to work out the kinks before installing it.

Is UAC enabled?

Just wondering. Someone is telling me to turn it off.

no problems after disabling UAC
Mar 7, 2007 9:51AM PST

Here's how to do it:

UAC, otherwise known as UAP (User Account Control/User Account Protection) in previous builds is another one of those features that just seems to get in the way of doing your work. This feature is designed with the average user in mind who needs this kind of protection to keep themselves out of trouble. If you are reading this then chances are you know how to manage your own system. Here is how to disable UAP:

1. Press the Windows Key + R (winkey + R).
2. At the run prompt, type "msconfig" without the quotes.
3. Go to the Tools tab, scroll down and select "Disable UAP" and click the run button.
4. You should see a command prompt open and it will say "Command completed successfully".
5. Reboot and enjoy the freedom to control your system as you wish.

That being said, no problems with iTunes itself. My 30gb iPod works fine. my 8gb Nano isn't recognized...LOL...I'm sure there'll be a new iTunes version within the next month or so...

Have you installed the newest iTunes?
Mar 19, 2007 6:26PM PDT

Was snooping around the net and found that Apple has released itunes 7.1.1 Go to the Help Tab in Itunes and see if you have the latest release installed. That may be the problem. It solved a lot of things for me.

Good luck

vbscript and iTunes
Apr 4, 2007 7:03AM PDT

I think that this is one of those times when the message is in error. I got the same message with iTunes. But I have installed so much other stuff with no difficulty, that I believe the problem is iTunes.

I checked my Windows\system32 directory and vbscript.dll is right where it belongs. I am not going to do anything for any one piece of software that jerks me or my computer around. It is too new, and too expensive, and I am too old.

I recommend waiting and coming back at the next release. I don't *need* iTunes, I was just going to try it out. If you must have it, then your decision might be different than mine.

Put vbscript into one search box with vista in the other. There are lots of "fixes."

vbscript.dll for Vista 64 users is in
Jun 13, 2007 9:20PM PDT

C:Windows\SysWOW64\vbscript.dll

I kept trying to activate the one in System 32 then I finally noticed that I was doing the wrong one, so when you using the prompt command type in

cd C:Windows\SysWOW64

regsvr32 vbscript.dll

This is what works on my HP Slimline Vista Home Premium
Jun 25, 2007 4:29AM PDT

On your keyboard, hit Windows key and R key together.

Type "regsvr32 vbscript.dll" without quote.

Click OK.

If you see the message "DllRegisterServer in C:\WINDOWS\system32\vbscript.dll succeeded," you are ready to go.

Try installing the iTunes again.

It worked for me.

iTunes won't load with Windows Vista OS
Apr 14, 2007 4:49AM PDT

I have Windows Vista (computer came loaded with it) and all went well with everything that I've had installed. But, I can't for the life of me figure out why iTunes won't complete loading. I had my libraries all ready to go on my external drive but each time I try to load iTunes 7.1.1. the "updating libraries" dialogue comes up and gets to about 75% and then just freezes. It just won't go any further. I can't stop the updating libraries message before it starts as it goes right into it when loading iTunes.

Anyone else having this problem?

How to enable vbscript and install itune for vista
May 4, 2007 4:25PM PDT

I just searched with google and found that below information is useful to fix this problem. Please have a try.

-------------------------------
When I tried to install Quicktime on Vista Home Premium, the installation wizard stalled at initiation with Error 2738.

This is because vbscript.dll is not registered.

I found this post on another site for registering vbscript.dll (the Apple suggested method did not work for me error 0x80004005 presumably because administrative power is not invoked first):

Hi, found the problem. Vista for some reason dosnt register VBScript. What you have to do is first of all find where vbscript.dll is, mine was in C:\Windows\System32, but I think it changes dependant on your version. Next you need to go to start -> accessories and the right click on command prompt and click "run as administrator", next type "cd C:\Windows\System32" (replace the dir if its differnt for you) and then type "regsvr32 vbscript.dll". It should then confirm that vbscript has been registered and everything should work. This will fix a few installs, i found the same problem with itunes as well.
Hope this helps,
Cheers,
James

Running Quicktime install works fine after this.

Registering vbscript.dll in Vista
May 8, 2007 4:55AM PDT

James, thanks. This worked for me, however, I first had to disable DEP (Data Execution Protectection) for the regsvr32.exe app. Mine is a new HP PC with Vista pre-installed and it supports the DEP feature.

Still not working
May 12, 2007 11:19AM PDT

I tried doing the same thing but got the following error message: The module "vbscript.dll" was loaded but the call to DllRegisterServer failed with error code 0x80004005. Plugging this into the MS site brings up stuff about XP SP2, but nothing with Vista. It basically requires a re-installation of Windows, but I'm on a Compaq that came with Vista preloaded. Not sure how to disable DEP, or if it's relevant considering the error message. Any help?

Error trying to register vbscript
Nov 9, 2007 7:57AM PST

I know this reply is ages later, but I got the same error you reported, banstyle69. I forgot to right-click the command prompt and then click "Run As Administrator". Once I did all that and ran regsvr32 vbscript.dll I got the message that VBScript had been registered.

response to enable vbscript and install itune for vista
May 20, 2007 1:55AM PDT

Dear new_learner
It worked!!!!! Thank you so much for taking the time to post this information. I spent 2 hours trying other things. The only thing different that I had to do was not type "cd C:\Windows\System32". The prompt automatically came up "c:\Windows\System32" after I clicked "run as administrator". Then I typed as you said "regsvr32 vbscript.dll" Once again thank you so much. If this didn't work I was going to return it.

Please Give step by step instructions
Jul 7, 2007 11:03PM PDT

Hi, I am running Windows Vista Basic. I a having a hard time following your directions on how to register VBScript. Please include every step. Is there something missing like "Right Click on Run?". Please include each step without assuming that I will include a step that may seem obvious.

I'm glad that you've found a solution. I'm amazed that I don't find any "official" post to resolve this problem which must effect so many people.

Note: I have already spent loads of time trying to install the new version of itunes/quicktime. Help!

There's an easier way...
Jul 8, 2007 7:35AM PDT

You don't actually have to go through the command prompt as was suggested. Instead:

1.) Press Windows + R
2.) Type in regsvr32 vbscript.dll (note the space)
3.) Press Enter or click OK.

If you have problems when attempting to launch iTunes, with an error stating that an unknown error has occurred and iTunes must close, download/install Quicktime 7.1.6 from Apple's website and then try launching iTunes again.

Hope this helps,
John

Thanks new_Lerner. I've been fighting this issue for days. Your solution to run the command prompt as admin is what I needed. What I didn't know is that even if you are logged on as admin the command prompt does not default to being run *by* admin. Odd, isn't it?
