Installing Fedora Core 4 Linux

Dec 25, 2005 9:49AM PST

I am taking this online class on "Linux 101". The class is on Fedora Core 4. I have my C-D's and I am planing on installing them on a second HD. The HD has nohing on it but at one time there was Win Me and other programs on it. I have deleted them. Some in the class are having trouble with the installation. What else do I need to do? Any tips for a trouble free installation would be greatly appreciated. Thanks ahead of time.

Oh yes I am on a Dell Optiplex 150 Tower 800 mhZ running Win 2k.

My observation.

What I usually see is overanalysis. Today's distros install and work if you "press the return key" during install and take the defaults. While I could write the a few places in the install may look confusing, the next button or OK usually makes it move along.

Another point of reflection is that some post "it doesn't work" or "it doesn't install." Sadly such all encompassing statements result in less than helpful responses since so little about the issue was revealed by the person who needed help.

In other words, you must help others help you.

Fedora Core 4 installation - serial drive problem?
Dec 26, 2005 8:44AM PST

I may not be able to take this discusion much further, since the variables are too many for one individual to sample. Fedora Core 4 32 bit installed flawlessly on a 64 bit dual-booted AMD machine but failed to install Grub bootloader (OS not found on start-up) on another similar machine differing mainly in that the latter has serial drives. Had similar problems with Mandriva, but MEPIS works impeccably.

Fedora Core Installation

The most trouble that people in the class or having seems to be with the Grub Loader. I was wondering if there was something special, or a certain way to go about the install.

For me?

I took the default suggestions. It's possible the class notes were to alter and understand Grub? But this is not shared. However, I've never had it fail when I take it's suggestions.

Grub Loader
Dec 26, 2005 4:38PM PST

I have gone over a lot of the posts others have made at the lesson site. It seems that if they have xp on the computer that is when they have trouble. Grub makes a change in the master boot record and xp will not load again. So due to the fact that I am not that smart I will put the o/s on a old computer all by it's self. That way I won't be buging everyone to get me out of trouble. Who knows maybe in time I will figure it out on my own. If you belive that I have another one to tell you.

Grub bootloader and Fedora Core 4
Dec 26, 2005 8:14PM PST

Agree, jbndhs. The problem lies with the Grub bootloader. There was a similar problem also in Fedora Core 2 (core 3 was OK). Being suspicious because of past experience, I chose to install the bootloader on the Fedora drive (hdb) on one machine (the one that works flawlessly with Fedora) and alternate the hard drive boot sequence in the BIOS, which is far from elegant, but safe. Unlike in your case my other machine still booted up Win XP but could not find Fedora, possibly because of serial HDD:s.
