I have a Dell Dimension 3000 vintage 2005 with 256MB of RAM that I would like to updrade to 1GB. I'm wondering do I add the new memory to the open slot or do I need to replace the old memory with the new?
Any guidance or advice appreciated.

Well according to corsair's memory finder http://www.corsair.com/configurator/system_results.aspx?id=249987 your PC only has two slots for memory so you would have to remove the one 256mb and install two 512mb or one 1gb stick.
