Installing a (network) HP printer laserjet 2055dn

by anf--2008 / May 22, 2009 10:11 AM PDT

I just unplugged an HP1300 laserjet and plugged in a new HP P2055dn laserjet. The HP 1300 worked fine before on all Apple and Windows machines. The new printer now works on all machines except (!) the XP machine. Nothing was changed (except switching printers), and except installing the new driver.

Here is the configuration: The printer has a USB connection to an Apple Airport Express wireless router. The XP PC communicates via this router.

Any ideas. I am going crazy -- HP is no help at all.

to give some more info, specially on the problem computer. Start with the setup on the XP machine that works and then on the one that does not. What is different?

Here is what I did:

I unplugged the USB from the HP1300 printer and plugged in the HP2055 printer. I deleted the HP 1300 from the Control Panel and added a new printer. That's all.

Now I replaced the HP1300 hoping to get things back as they were -- NO LUCK. It too is not recognized by the XP machine.

I had this problem when I first installed the HP1300 a couple of years ago. A Windows savant come to the house and, I believe, fixed things by working though the "Run" command. I don't dare play with this unless an expert helps me.

Finally, HELP <screaming out loud>

A friend suggested the following:

Configure the printer as a local printer

Change the port number from 9100 to 9101 (this is what did it)

now it works.
