Installing a combo drive to a Ibook G3.

Nov 3, 2006 8:12AM PST

I got an ibook G3, 600 mhz, 256 of ram, cdrom, mac os x.1. I want to install a combo drive, can you guys tell me if it is hard to do? I want to do it myself, also can you tell me if the Tiger of my G4 desktop would install on my G3 ibook? I want to upgrade it the most that I can.

How will you get the combo drive?

From what I can tell, it is not an orderable part for "do it yourself" install from Apple. Do you not have a drive in there now? If you have to ask how easy it is, you probably don't want to do it.

According to Apple, Tiger will run on a G3 PowerBook, but a G3 iBook is not on the list:

Any internal work on the original G3 iBook, Clamshell?, is very difficult but not impossible.
You may have difficulty finding a drive to fit the machine and also may have a problem finding a Take Apart for that model.

I have a G3 iBook, Clamshell, running 10.3.9.
Anything less than 10.2 is a complete waste of time.

You can use Safari

which is the OS X broswer. you will find it in the Applications folder.
The icon looks like a compass.

Have you thought about moving up to OS X 10.2 or 10.3?

Tiger is a bit much for that machine but 10.3.9, if you can get it on a CD, will run quite well.

Yes, it will run nicely on your iBook.

I have it running on an iBook G3 Clamshell.

You could be right about Safari. I've been using it for so long that it seems like it has always been there.

Check the specs for Firefox or Camino

upgrading to Panther.
10.1 was more of a Beta than a decent system. It was good but not as good as it could have been.
