Installing 98 to a new PC

May 31, 2005 5:52AM PDT

I just bought a new PC with an empty HDD and a 64bit processor.
I want to make it Dual Boot (98SE/XP Pro 64bit).
I made 3 partition all primary: Fat32,Fat32,NTFS.
I boot from the cd, but when I go to win98 folder and type setup it crashes.
Do I need a driver for SATA? Is there any problem with partitions?

Computer Specifications:
Intel Pentium IV 630 (64bit, 3GHz)
MB Asus P5AD2-E (775 chipset)
HDD SATA 250GB Maxtor

to be installed first, so you may be having a problem with that 250G hard disk...

Thank you but there are still problems...

I read the site and I found out it is useful but the partition I made was only 15 GB (I only want 98 to run a couple of old programs that don't run in XP).

I made the partitions using another program (not FDISK) but it still does not work.
It crashes just after I type setup and press enter.

Yup. I expect that to happen.

And working in the dark with no program names and more, it's unlikely anyone will guess what the issue is.

Best of luck,

Bob

Try hiding

the other 2 partitions except the one where you want the 98 installed. The program that created the partitions will have such an option, hopefully.

Start over...

You made those partitions with some OS setup and that's your problem as NTSF is available but not for win98. I know you're not trying to access the NTSF but you really need to start witn win98 first. Kill alll those partitons, just delete or wipe them out9use http://www.killdisk.com). Get your hands on a bootable floppy(yeah!) with win98 made as a "startup diskette". It will have all you need. However, if your HD is bigger than 64gb, then you need the bootdisk from http://www.bootdisk.com and get the one for windows98SE. Download it make the bootable win98SE floppy. Later, boot with it in there and then FDISK, format. etc., then make the three partitions, all FAT32. Once all complete, now install windoze 98, load all drivers and updates, etc, until finish. Now you can load windoze XP or any other OS. *HINT* load the oldest windoze first then the next, next, etc. Under XP load, make sure you pick the right partition. Once done, you can convert or convert while installing(beforehand) the OS. It will ask if you lioke dual boot, pick YES. Last, if you like, you edit the dual boot menu, enter the XP device mgr. area and select the 1st and 2nd boot sequence order, save, apply then exit. You can get alot of info from this website: http://www.blackviper.com

why 64 bit?

Hi - you got all the right advice, but some is missing: 1) FAT32 does not like partitions larger than 19 giga 2) I am not sure that WIN98 will work in conjunction with XP 64-bit. So your choice might be between making more partitions and forgetting about WIN98. Normally you should first install WIN98 on D: and later the XP on C:. But if you do have the XP already installed, there is a program that lets you install 98 afterwards, I forgot its name but Bob can point you to it. Good luck. Amos.
