Installer.exe file

Jul 9, 2007 9:05AM PDT

Whenever I go to a particular website, there seems to be alot of activity with my modem lights (on dial up here for now again). When I go to TaskMgr, I see that every time, there is an installer.exe file lists using no CPU usage, but obviously it is downloading from that site. I plan to email the site and ask them what this is, unless it's a program to update their software (it's a free bingo site that has no ads other than their banner announcements regarding winners, etc. that come up in between games), but even if that's true, I'm suspecting that there is more to it than that.

Is there any way to check this installer.exe file to find out what its functions really are? I seem to be able to stop the process in TaskMgr without losing the site on screen and that continues to function okay. I get no warnings from any of my antivirus or spyware programs which are always running in the background in real time. It just ticks me off that the site can intrude without any control on my part at all other than to manually end the process as I have been doing.

because the game isn't a flash program on the website url and must be downloaded first, the program shortcut icon won't run if I rename the installer.exe file I found within the installation folder in Program Files. I've written to the site and once I hear from them to find out if it's only a file to keep their software current with the latest version I will decide at that point if it's worth hanging onto or uninstall it.

GRRRRRRRRR

Thanks........

have you taken a look at the site's pages to see what scripts are doing what?

Going to the website ( http://www.cashmillbingo.com/ ) and even going to the download.aspx page and viewing the source code has no reference to anything other than the actual setup.exe file that you get when you click "Download".

Looking at as much of the code as I can using a program called Peek for the .exe file that gets downloaded still indicates 'installerCashmill' but I believe that's only a reference back to the actual source of the game files themselves.

Since the setup.exe file is used only to download and install the actual game (you cannot play it at the normal URL website because it's not a Flash game like most sites), there is something that includes the installer.exe file as it is finishing the download and installation. The setup.exe file you originally download is much like the installers that MS has for things like DirectX etc where you get a small download file originally and then you are whisked to an FTP file download area of their own to get the actual file installed without usually being able to save the whole file to your harddrive. (That's the only comparison I can make that would be similar to this)

So unless I get a response from them (not a word so far to my emailed inquiry), I will be uninstalling and cleaning up the registry for their site. I don't like unpleasant surprises and this turned out to be one in my book even if my AV and anti-spyware programs tell me nothing is going on.

Thanks...
