Installed new sound card-CD/DVD drive not reading any disk

Sep 13, 2004 12:48PM PDT

I recently installed a new Creative Sound Blaster Live LS sound card. After installing, my CD/DVD rom will not read any format of disk. It lights up and opens and closes. Running XP Home edition. Souround sound works properly. Computer came with an intregrated sound card. I,m not sure what driver to disable or if this is even the problem. My CD/RW drive has also been lost(Drive E) It's not in "My Computer" anymore. It also lights up and opens and closes.

Very easy to dislodge the IDE cable.

Re-check the cable for proper seating.

J. Dillon: It's the ribbon cable which plugs into the back of your drives. While installing the sound card, it's possible that it may have been dislodged or loosened. Just check to be sure that it is connected properly at both ends.

The IDE(ribbon) seems to be connected properly. What's next?

First a question. Do you have more than one CD/DVD drive? If you do check to see which one is master and which is slave. Sometimes the one that is Master needs to be changed to slave. Some drives don't play well together. Also get the latest Bios updates for your MB. Then make sure you have the latest driver updates for your DVD/CD ROM's.

Any luck on your optical devices?

Dillon,

Been between computers and hurricans.

If ribbon cables are ok......
1. Stated IDE cables where OK, did you push on them to see if they where fully seated? I had one system that periodically would not boot, no hard drive, slide back the side cover, push in on the IDE connection and the H/D was back.

2.Try one device at a time with jumpers set to master-
-> If devices work apart, update M/B drivers.
-> If one device does not work, that is your issue.
And yes I have seen optical devices roll over and die with out warning.

On reinstall set devices to master/slave.
Master will be the top device using the end connector
Slave will be the second device using the middle connector.

I uninstalled the drivers. The computer found the CD/DVD rom hardware on re-boot. Re-installed drivers and it has been working OK so far. ???
