Installation problems with XP SP2

Nov 22, 2004 5:02PM PST

I'm running Win XP Pro SP1 and trying to install the SP2 upgrade. When I try to install, about mid-way through the installation, I get an error message. "Cannot copy file to destination directory." The file in question is sprb0c0a.dl_ If I click "cancel," and answer "Yes" when it subsequently asks me if I want to continue installation without that file, then I get the same error message only seconds later, this time dealing with sprb0c0a.dll. Again I can click "cancel," but this time I don't get the option to continue installation without the file. This time I only have the option to cancel the installation and roll back. Microsoft's KB has no information on either this file nor the error message, and Googling the file brings up only a Dutch website listing the files included in SP2. I'm at a total loss. Any ideas? Thanks in advance!

I'm sorry, I probably should have said that I tried both methods and got the same results from each. Any other ideas? Thanks again.

I've seen that page. It only tells what problems can be fixed once SP2 is installed. It has nothing to do with problems while installing SP2. Thanks, though.

You didn't mention what preparation was done and you should find the explanation in the article "How-to and Support for Windows XP Service Pack 2" helpful. However, the subject "What to Know Before You Download and Install" is pretty light in what to use for checking for deceptive software. Please see this forum "thread" instead.

Short version of the story: I got it to install.

Long version:

Read that thread, followed instructions to the letter, still no go. After doing some more Googling of the file, and using File Alyzer on it, I discovered that it was the Spanish version of XPSP2RES.dll, which I believe deals mostly with the text inside the tip balloons. Well, XPSP2RES.dll actually has entries in MS's KB. Looking at those, it seemed there were a lot of hotfixes (90% of which I had installed) dealing with that file, one in particular which mentioned Explorer locking the file. So, I uninstalled all the hotfixes that dealt with the file. I was about to try SP2 install again, when I remembered that I had installed Proofing Tools for Office 2000 long ago and forgotten about it. I thought the Spanish version of the file might be having some kind of conlfict with Proofing Tools. So I also uninstalled Proofing Tools, restarted, and tried SP2 installation again. Finally, it worked like a charm. Thanks for your help and suggestions, I appreciate it!

You can check the Svcpack.log file in order to have additional clues. Make sure that you have enough free space for SP2 installation. For details, read:
