INSTALL SP 2 FIRST ?

by joeenel / November 15, 2004 1:14 AM PST

I have a home network with the main computer running XP home SP1, a laptop with the same OS and two W 98 machines. Everything works perfectly. I will be installing a wireless access point soon and was wondering about installing SP 2 on the two XP machines. Should I do it before installing the wireless system? After? Never? I have read all I can about SP 2 and I am hoping to make the installation of SP 2 and the wireless system as painless as possible. Thanks in advance.

Personally, I'd do SP2 first. Then if the worst comes to pass, you can just do the wireless setup in the process of rebuilding. But that's me, you can make an argument for either direction.

Whatever you do, put a few days inbetween the tasks, so if any problems crop up, it's easier to figure out which installation caused it.

Make sure your XP PC is free off spyware & viruses before you install SP2.

You will find it easier to set up wireless network with SP2.

Besides SP2 is needed to further protect your PCs running XP.

Just a little more reading to add to the two previous posts for when you are ready. You may have done all this already but if not, here it is.

You have to be completely prepared for SP2 which means. Spyware free, Adware free, virus free BEFORE you install SP2, Also go to this link from Microsoft which also has links inside of it that will tell you what to do to prepare, including programs that are known to have problems which you may have to patch BEFORE you install SP2. Also go to your computer manufacturer's web site to see if any programs that came with your computer (non Microsoft programs) that need some sort of a patch BEFORE you install SP2. After all of the above, you should have no problems. Here is the Microsoft link. Hope this helps.
