Inspiron 8600 won't start

Jul 5, 2009 1:21PM PDT

I have a older Inspiron 8600 laptop that was working fine last night. I completely shut the laptop off everynight because it gets so warm. This morning when I tried to power it up nothing happened.I noticed that the AC adapter power cord was coming apart where the little socket meets the cord. I have tried removing the battery and the power cord and powering on with out the battery in and holding down the power button and reconecting the power cord. I also went out and spent $100.00 on a universal ac adapter with many different sockets. It still won't power on. Any sugestions besides buying a new computer this one has information in its memory that I need tomorrow.

We also have a Gateway laptop. My company uses only Dell products so Im hoping that I can talk our IT person into taking a look at it for me. If the battery was completely dead when I took it out and tried the ac power cord it should have powered on right?
How will the geeks website help?

I own that cable and I pull the hard disk from the failed machine and it converts it to a bog standard USB hard disk so we can get to the files the user/owner forgot to backup.

I bought windows 7 for my Inspiron 8600 laptop if I got a bigger hard drive 160GB would Windows 7 work better? What would I need to get Windows 7 to work better for my Inspiron 8600
I do have Windows 7 already on my Inspiron 8600 but it's not like the windows 7 you see on the newer computer. If I were to get a bigger hard drive for my Inspiron 8600 would windows 7 work as good as it does on the newer laptops? I just put 2GB memory in my Inspiron 8600

I had XP and wanted Windows 7 I've seen on other webpages that people have bought a bigger hard drive an 160GB to be exact. I just put in 2 of the 1GB memory on my Dell Inspiron 8600 laptop. I tried downloading the Aero Graphics and my computer will not take it and I was wondering if I were to get a Bigger hard drive if that would help at all. I have Windows 7 on my computer but it doesn't have the Aero Graphics on it when I go to compare a new computer that has Windows 7 to my laptop Dell Inspiron 8600 w/Windows 7 it looks different. Seems like I don't get as much of the advance of WIndows 7. Like if I wanted to change the window color I only get the basic verses the newer computers w/windows 7. It seems like the settings are different than my settings mine is more basic (I guess is the right word for it) I guess I just thought any computer old or new could have Windows 7. When it comes to computers I not the smartest I do know some thing.
