Inspiron 1720 boots then shuts down

Dec 23, 2009 2:37PM PST

Hi Guys My Inspiron 1720 laptop boots only without the battery in it if I hold the on button down for ten seconds, then the screen comes on and loads then shuts down (doesn't make it to windows) The fan doesn't start up at all,so I gather it is a faulty fan or systemboard. This is the first laptop I have seen with the switchboard integrated into the keyboard. Could it be a faulty keyboard that can cause this?

Now this is weird
Dec 23, 2009 4:53PM PST

Just found out that if I turn the laptop on its right side it will run. I am loading windows 7 ultimate on it right now, watching it behind me sideways. Hmmmm maybe the power jack needs resoldering. I'm not going to move it until I've finished loading windows. This is weird lol. If you have any other ideas on what it might be let me know I would appreciate it.

Bob

Staple.

I fixed one like that last year. We tore the machine down and found a (metal) staple inside floating around inside. Lucky for them it didn't damage something. They were still upset we would not give them any warranty. Big old VOID stamp over the store's work warranty section.
