Inquiry on Best Sounding MP3-Player Out There (As of Now)

Apr 20, 2006 3:16AM PDT

Hello out there. This is my first time to post in this forum. I'm currently looking for an mp3 player that fits my preference on music. I like my music to be clear, realistic, and powerful (with those crystal clear "highs" - I guess you may call it treble) similar to when I play mp3's on my PC with Windows Media Player (on an ordinary sound card). Due to some good reviews on the Creative Zen Micro Photo, I have just bought one this past month. I was expecting that this player will meet my requirements on music. But I was wrong. The sound of the Zen Micro Photo was not bad but its sound is not the same as when I play my mp3's on a PC (Again, I was looking for music with that crisp "highs"). So I was a bit dissappointed with the product. I am currently researching for a replacement and I was afraid to have the same mistake again in choosing an mp3 player. Later, I have read an article here at Cnet that they have conducted a study of which is the best sounding mp3 player out there. In this study, the Sony NW-HD5 came on top. The review of the Sony HW-HD5 (in terms of sound) seems promising based on the actual user reviews at Cnet. But the date of the said study conducted by Cnet is about mid-July 2005 (last year). There are a lot of mp3 players that came out after this date (one of them may sound better than the Sony NW-HD5). Is the Sony NW-HD5 still the best out there when it comes to sound quality? If it is, I'd like to know if it meets my preferences on music (I havent got a chance to try the actual unit since those Sony sellers in my place wouldnt let me do so). Any help would be very much appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Don't expect amazing sound out of the headphones that come with the player. If your that picky about sound spend the cash on a really good set of head phones first, then start buring thru all the different players.

stock earbuds, cause everyone knows included earbuds are subpar. Get a nice set of cans and give the zen another try. I personally think that particular player has excellent SQ...I especially appreciate the fact that it has EQ settings....try some Sennheiser or Shure earphones.....

I also tried other earphones with my Zen Micro Photo

I appreciate your reply guys. I have actually tried my favorite earphones on my Micro Photo - although not as complicated as the Shures or the Etymotics out there. These earphones are the ones that I use when listening music in my PC - and I liked the sound coming on it. The sound coming from it is clear and has those crisp highs (when using a PC). When I tried the same earphones on my Zen Micro Photo, the sound is not the same as when I'm listening on my PC. It's not as it sounded bad. Most listeners would have considered it fine for their preferences. Based on my taste, I'm just not satisfied with what I'm hearing from the Zen Micro Photo. So suspect that it is the player itself that I have to replace.

so far i have heard and tested many players, the Sony NW-HD5 has the best audio quality, and i would highly reccommend picking up a good pair of headphones, i listened to this player with sound isolating headphones, and it was truly magnificent-my advise would be to go get a really good pair of headphones maybe with an airplane adapter so u can use them on flights if u plan to fly alot, and then go out and buu the sony
