Inquiry about HDMI hookup with A/V receiver and speakers

Feb 23, 2006 3:19PM PST

I recently purchased a 23 inch Samsung LCD TV as well as a Panasonic S97S DVD player. I must say that my picture looks great with the HDMI hookup, I have yet to see anything clearer, but my TV has trouble when it comes to the audio; for low sounds seem to bother it quite a bit. I had planned to get a separate audio system all along, but now I have to find the right one.
When i looked at the new audio from CES, one HTIB in particular caught my eye. The new Samsung HT-AS710 A/V receiver with speakers. Link- http://www.cnet.com/4831-11405_1-6413992.html?tag=ltst
This had the HDMI i was dying to use as well as speakers, all for an MSRP of $450! But this is new and seems too good to be true so I decided to wait for a few reviews. In the meantime i realized that I did not know exactly the hookups in an audio system worked; for instance, my A/V receiver and DVD player both have the HDMI hookup, this means my video and sounds should be quite nice. But can i or should i hook up the A/V receiver to the speakers via HDMI, or is the best i can currently do only Component or Composite? If this is the case, will this change in the near future? If anyone can explain how the hookup in a home theater goes, i would be appreciative.
I have been looking at other audio system while i wait for my question to be answered including the Pioneer VSX-72TXV. Link-

This seems like a top ranking A/V receiver, and it should last for quite a while to come. But after i need a recommendation for a 7.1 speaker system-ideally. Even if i found the right speakers, i must wonder if i need that for a room my size, only about 300 square feet. If i buy something overpowering, it is far from the worst of things as I will soon be moving out, but I would just like to know what the difference in quality would be between the Samsung HTIB and the Pioneer with a good set of speakers. The price difference will probably tell the answer, but is it worth it. Thanks!

You need to check the Samsung web site for full info.
HTIB is reciver and speakers, sometimes will have DVD player also.
A revicer is just that, no speakers.
What is your total budget for audio?? This will determine what path you take.
My guide line is 40% for the reciver and 60% for the sprekers. John

Budget

Well my total budget isn't huge, my parents are going to chip in 500 and i can chip in a few hundred myself. I was thinking about the big Pioneer receiver, and it would honestly overpower my room. The Samsung seems pretty good for me, and from what i read about the CES, the audio system was meant to compliment the new DVD players. I believe they said 6.1 system, so I'm pretty sure that it'll be 6 speakers will the A/V...but for $450 retail, and HDMI switching...that seems too good to be true. If some one could also enlighten me about what cords are used to connect speakers to the A/V receiver that would be great.
