Inoperable IE 6 SP2

Sep 30, 2005 10:15PM PDT

I do not know what happened and my IE6 SP2 stopped loading pages completely. It just sits there doing nothing.
I tried the IEFix program to no avail. I downloaded the latest updates, still nothing. I reinstalled it from the CD through Control Panel, without any luck. I made sure that Zone Alarm is letting it through, but still... What else should I do?
Your help is appreciated.

Darn it!

Just when I thought it worked, it started again. It will not open the pages again. I have read some of the suggested solution here and in Google but none of them works. Any ideas guys?

I have posted my Hijack This logfille in Castlecops.
In the meantime I run MS AntiSpyware, AdAware, Search&Destroy, Spyware Doctor, CWShhedder, AVG and Bitdefender with no traces of malaware. On first examination I did not detect anything wrong in the Hijack This logfile either. That is strange! Any ideas?

I'd have to see the log.

But it's amazing what new bugs are showing up and your list of detectors miss it.

Wait and see?

Not a fix.

Those (file missing) items could have been cleaned up prior to posting. I'm guessing you don't have bit defender anymore. The first item and details such as Bit defender's removal help others help you.

If bit defender is no more, I'd clean those up. Then I'd look again.

Can you explain the DNS entry?

O17 - HKLM\System\CCS\Services\Tcpip\..\{38463AFB-1C1B-4C58-A34F-2FA137D69AC6}: NameServer = 194.219.227.2,193.92.150.3 seems very odd to me.

Bob
Those DNS numbers are my ISP provider. I do not know what the previous entry is. The one before the name server numbers.

It seems an odd entry to have. I let DHCP or

I don't add such an entry. Maybe your ISP software did that.

I see one issue...
Oct 1, 2005 3:44AM PDT
O8 - Extra context menu item: &Search - http: //bar.mywebsearch.com/menusearch.html?p=ZNfox000

That suggests to me that you have My Search Bar, or one of its varients, on your computer. You can click here for more information on that particular piece of malware, as well as instructions on how to remove it manually. However, I'm not sure if that's what's causing the problem with IE not fully loading pages...perhaps a HJT expert will catch something else.

Hope this helps,
John

Followed instructions. I did not find any trace of My WebSearch or similar in my registry or elsewhere.
Thanks

Is it still in your Hijackthis log?

Let's hope someone gets to reading your log in full soon. But let me state that I think it's a good thing to understand what each entry is in there for.

I think I found the reason
Oct 1, 2005 7:50PM PDT

A short time ago when I was reading my emails there were no images on the main body of the messages. Under the From and Subject lines, there was a note asking to click it if I wanted the images to appear. I did that but no images were appearing. I then read a solution somewhere in these forums. The solution was:
Run/regedit/Hkey_Classes_Root/protocols/name space handler. If I found an entry there named "http" I sould delete it which I did. Then clicking on the note in the email, I could see the pictures and animations. However I realized that this "http" entry was coming back every time and could not verify how and why. So I had to delete it every time in order my email to show pictures. That's the story of that.
Now I discovered that when this entry is in there, my IE will not load pages, and when I delete it the IE works properly.
Beats me as for why this happens and how and when this entry is entered in my registry causing this problem.
Any gurus out there?
