Init: no init file found

May 18, 2007 8:11AM PDT

Ubuntu 6.06 LTS

When I boot up the following error occurs:

"INIT: No init file found"

Then I get "Enter Run Level:" I cannot enter a number for the level

Tried system recovery mode and getting "Enter run level" cannot enter a number at this time

Have live cd with install function. This distro installed and running for a few months now with no problems until today. It is installed on 80 gb sata harddrive partioned with 39.8 gb and swap file. No other os on this harddrive

What do I try now,
Ray

Init: no initbat file found

Error in original post error reads "INIT: no initbat file found"

Keyboard and mouse freezes when "enter level" appears in boot sequence and recovery mode.

(NT) are you sure it's not inittab?

Given enough tries maybe I will get it correct

Problem with trying this
May 19, 2007 5:03AM PDT

is that the keyboard and mouse are frozen

Only command line I can get to is Grub> and I get there from the boot manager and from there I cannot seem to open anything. I get all types of excuses when entering different commands

Sorry.

All user levels show up here. Linux usually gets the more technical ones so I may give out the missing information without noting that one could boot a LIVECD of some Linux, mount the hard disk if need be and then fix the missing file by editing it with vi or other ways.

Sorry but I no longer provide step by step instructions. But the missing file, it's contents are now known. You only need to put it back.

I will try that if all else fails I will reinstall and start new.
