Question

Infrared light for a Sony Handycam DCR-SX63

Oct 20, 2014 11:56AM PDT

I've been searching for information on an infrared light that will work for my Sony Handycam DCR-SX63. I know the camera doesn't feature night shot, but I read that if you point your remote at your camera and it can pick up the blinking light a the end that it can read infrared light (which mine can). First of all, is this true? And if so, can anyone recommend an IR light that will work with my Handycam? Personal experience with one would be good to hear about too.

Answer
The problem is that IR block.

I suggest you research "IR block in camcorders" so you know why such a light doesn't work until you change that out. It's well discussed so let's let you bone up a little.

1) Your DCR-SX63 does not have NightShot.

2) It mounts to the Sony-proprietary Advanced Interface Shoe and your SX63 does not have one (the light draws power from the camcorder's battery through the AIS). There is no "external cold-shoe mountable" unit.

For what it is worth, the external cold-shoe unit won't work, either.

Bob's right. The IR block won't allow it.
