General discussion

infrared aftermarket light

Mar 24, 2005 2:17AM PST

Some camcorders (like the Sony DCH HC-40 and 42, among others) use a green infrared light in their night shot modes. This wasn't a critical selling feature to me, and therefore i bought the canon optura 30 for quite a bit less, but i thought the green infrared might be a neat add-on if available.

Is anyone aware of an aftermarket product that will fit the optura 30 shoe and produce similar the similar greenish results?

I think you're confused.

The green is the color selected for the human eye on the display and not the color of the infrared.

hmmm...i didn't know that.

Does this mean there's no practical way to add-on an infrared night vision capability to a camcorder that doesn't have it to begin with?

Good info on the infrared puck. I was kinda hoping for something designed especially for a camcorder to attach to its respective shoe and something relatively cheap ($50 or so). Probably expecting too much, huh?

Not at all.

The dollar amount is spot on for about the range you see at that link, but without the power source.

See Infrared LED Illuminator at http://discovercircuits.com/L/LED.htm

There are too many more out there like that.

I was looking around the internet and I found the Sony Infrared Light - HVL-IRM in the $35-$50 price range. Looks like it mounts on a bar that could possibly attach where a tripod would normally go. PLus it runs on its own battery source. I wonder what adding this to canon optura 30 would do?

for ref here's a link to the specs
