This is not a bug. It's how the OS works to keep track of locations of the icons when you view the drive in finder and more.

I have a iMac running OSX 10.7.5 and recently introduced an external hard disk as a time machine backup disk.
I erased/formatted/renamed the disk and it came up as being empty, however Disk Utility reported that there were 11 Folders and 52 files on the disk.
Since then I have not run setup for Time Machine or transferred any files to the disk but the number of files reported by Disk Utility has increased and now stands at 80.
My question is, what are these folders and files and how do I access/delete/stop them from proliferating?
