Question

Information and Network Security

Mar 14, 2016 9:31AM PDT

Hello everyone, I'm new here and I never actually used forums before but I have been suggested to give it a try to find help for my problem.
I'm a master student for Information and Network security with a background of a degree in Computer Network Management and Design both courses done in a University in Scotland.
I'm almost at the time in my master that I need to propose a project/dissertation related to security.
I had a look at some projects other students had proposed in the past years, and most of those are programming related.
My background is mostly networking related with understanding of hardware and software, and my only programming skills are limited to HTML5, CSS, PHP and SQL.
I'm looking for some advice and ideas on what I can look into to create a proposal to then develope on a proper master project.
Being quite taken by other classes I found myself stuck without much ideas and I would really appreciate some help from other fellow IT enthusiastics and professionals with more experience and open minded than me.
Thank you.
Raffaele M.

Can you clarify your question?

"I'm looking for some advice and ideas on what I can look into to create a proposal to then develope on a proper master project."

I would be guessing you are looking for a master's project. Such searches are common and here, students are given ideas by the prof or the professor has staff to help you find your project.

Hi, thank you for your time.
I'm looking for for a topic, an idea for my master project, has to be pointed on security, but I have no idea what topic look in to as most common problem are related to programming, and I don't know how to program a part for what I specified in my post above.
Also if you have any other place online where I can look for advice could you please point me there?
If it helps I also got a very good knowledge of servers and virtualisation technologies.
Thank you.

So it's the old find a thesis project question.

All the colleges here have support from the professor or their staff to assist the student in finding a project.

-> But since you don't write code (programming) you could tackle the non programming security issues. You could study the old simple exploits. That is, put out a survey and ask the responder for email account name and password.

You would be surprised that someone will fill that in!

To be clear. I'm pointing you back to your professor and staff since they must accept your project.

my compnay in the past is called SQL injections This is where users try to enter SQL query commands at logins. Also Zero day attacks on Flash and Java. This has forced alot of changes in the browser security of today.
