Question

Info on video file bit rate, and what file should I keep?

Oct 9, 2011 9:14AM PDT

Hi,
I downloaded a video from youtube and converted it with 2 different programs, and I get different video specs on the final file. One is bigger than the other one and has a higher bit rate, which I don't know what it means.
Please check the following specs and tell me which file should I keep and why one is much bigger. Thanks.

FILE 1
Duration : 3mn 12s
Bit rate mode : Variable
Bit rate : 3 713 Kbps
Width : 640 pixels
Height : 480 pixels
Display aspect ratio : 4:3
Frame rate : 29.970 fps
Color space : YUV
Bit depth : 8 bits
Scan type : Progressive
Compression mode : Lossy
Bits/(Pixel*Frame) : 0.403
Stream size : 85.2 MiB (96%)

FILE 2
Duration : 3mn 12s
Bit rate mode : Variable
Bit rate : 1 477 Kbps
Width : 640 pixels
Height : 480 pixels
Display aspect ratio : 4:3
Frame rate : 25.000 fps
Color space : YUV
Bit depth : 8 bits
Scan type : Progressive
Compression mode : Lossy
Bits/(Pixel*Frame) : 0.192
Stream size : 33.9 MiB (85%)

Answer
Info on video file bit rate

Bit rate basically means how much data (bits) is captured (processed) per second (bps). File 1 has over 2.5 bps more than File 2. The frame rates are different between the files as well and also affects file size. Frame rate basically is how many times (frequency) a unique image appears per second (fps). You'll notice the fps is higher in File 1 than File 2 therefore more bits per frame. I'm guessing you used defaults in both programs which often vary and the codecs used all affect file size. These are a few reasons why one file is larger than the other.
