Just to cross check I went to
Sep 2, 2011 9:18AM PDT
http://www.softpedia.com/get/Office-tools/Text-editors/TextEdit.shtml and downloaded it there.

I sent it to VirusTotal.com and looks clean.

I get the "direct download" from http://download.cnet.com/TextEdit/3000-2351_4-10893139.html and it's the same file and report.

Are you using the BIG DOWNLOAD BUTTON? If so, please read the next link.

Just a comment . . .

Looking at the Virus Total page, is it my imagination or are those AV products severely out of date?

Now that's an interesting observation.

Not noticed that before.

The concept of this is to catch old and new problems.

WHAT??!!
Sep 3, 2011 7:00AM PDT

Sooooo, updated versions do not catch old problems?

Maybe someone needs to update the page? And if those are indeed the latest versions available, I don't think I would use the site.

Hi, we're talkin' about the file TESetup.exe 798 KB (817,190 bytes) download page @
http://download.cnet.com/textedit/3000-2351_4-10842593.html

?!

I've been using Download.com for over 10 years (easily Happy) & I can't recall that I've ever gotten a dirty file from here.... If somehow your download file is really infected, then you must have some sort of serious (local?) problem on your computer. Below's the link 2 teh screenshot, (animated) GIF:
