Industry wide RAM confusion.

Dec 1, 2003 11:42AM PST

Gateway Tech says 128MB SDRAM.
Another Gateway Tech says 1024MB SDRAM.
Another Gateway Tech says1GB SDRAM.
A Gateway web page says 384MB SDRAM.
Another Gateway web page says up to 3GB SDRAM, qualified at 1.5GB SDRAM.
Another Gateway Tech says 512MB SDRAM.
RAM check tools at Crucial and Comtread say 384MB SDRAM.

You have more than adequate RAM for your PC to perform speedily.

Being WinME the maximum RAM is 512 MB and more than that is a waste of $.

If you PC is slow there are other possible causes:
Parasites/spyware are the main causes if you D/L files from Kazaa or other P2P sites.

Or your Registray could be clogged with obsolete entries.

David, I have Windows 98SE and went from 256 mb Ram to 768 MB. I guess you are telling me that anything over 512 MB is not contributing anything. Correct?

caktus,

Are you sure about the model number. At the Gateway support site, they list model numbers such as this for desktop computers:

500 SE Special
v667c
310 Series Computers
510 Series Computers
610 Media Center Series
710 Series Computers
E2100 Series Computers
E4100 Series Computers
E6100 Series Computers

Laptops have other model numbers, but I can find nothing such as "System Model Performance 800" although many of the above models have 800 Mghz setups. It could be a problem with the Gateway site, then again.....

Hope this helps and please let us know.

Performance 800 is the correct model. There's also an 800 Deluxe and I think a Performance Professional.

The 800 is referenced at http://support.gateway.com/support/allsysteminfo.asp?sn=0020100103.

I'm pretty sure mine is the 800 as it's 800 on the invoice and Belarc Advisor http://www.belarc.com/free_download.html identified it as an 800.

After three years it's probably outdated. Infact it may have been outdated when the takked me into buying.

I keep it because of the life-time tech support, wich I've learned has serious limitations (even though supposed to be pro's.)

Have a great day.
