General discussion

Indecent definition.

Feb 16, 2004 11:41PM PST

After days and days of people screaming for the FCC to head off indecent programming, and for them to protect us from indecent programming on cable, no one even tried to offer a definition of what content should be restricted.

Does this speak more to the intractability of the problem, or to the lack of confidence on the part of those who wish FCC intervention.

I don't know.

Dan

No, it's just a reluctance to toss pearls of wisdom...

...to swine who want to nitpick everything due to their inabilities and more often deliberate refusal to understand and accept the intangible assets of morality.

Here's a suggestion.

If they want some help in defining what is indecent or immoral they would do best to consult those who are expert on such matters, preachers, ministers, religious leaders.

As much as the FCC respects the opinions of the membership of Speakeasy, I don't think they'd lift any of our definitions for their use. But if you'd like to offer your own definition feel free to use whatever sources you wish.

I'm in EST, too. I've got time. Take as much as you need. Last time I looked there were no entries at all. If you're is the only one the FCC will have no choice but to use yours. I hope it's a good one!

Good luck.

I never won a contest in my life, and figured out the odds of winning this one would break the "curse"

I just can't imagine a definition that would be acceptable to everyone. How about if we just all learn to change the channel or better yet turn it off and do something.

I think that's what Dan is getting at, that "indecent" is a subjective thing and no "expert" can state as fact what is indecent and what isn't. There may be general societal points of agreement, e.g. rape and murder are indecent, but what you find acceptable on TV and what I find acceptable on TV are not likely to match exactly.

As you said, if you don't like what's on, change the channel.
