DHCP

Your IP address is being assigned by DHCP. That means that the router tells your laptop what IP address it has.

When Windows can't find the DHCP server, it assigns an autoconfiguration address. This address can be tough to shake. One step is to reset your router by unplugging it for a few seconds. The second is to repair your wireless connection (in Network Connections, right click, choose repair). In Windows service pack 2, it should go through several steps and repair your connection effectively. If that doesn't work, or if it can't renew your IP Address, make sure you have the right wireless key entered for any WEP security.

Next step is to check out your TCP/IP settings in Network Connections. (Right click connection, properties, double-click "Internet Protocol (TCP/IP)"). Check to see if you've entered any default gateways that are spurrious or whose ip addresses have changed.

Plug directly into the router and access the linksys configuration utility in your web browser (Enter 192.168.1.1, press enter, user name "admin" and blank password), and make sure all your settings match. See if your laptop shows up on the DHCP clients table.

Past that, call a Computer Tech, a wireless specialist such as myself. Wink I charge $25 an hour plus travel, which might kill you if you don't live in South Florida. Happy

WEP

I used to use WEP on my wired/wireless router. The wireless unit would never co-operate. Bad IPs, bad subnets. Either had LAN or WAN. Never both. Even with supplying IP & Subnet numbers.

When my laptop arrived I had the same issues with my network. That led me to use WPA. Being my other wi-fi is a 98SE machine that meant I lost that one on my network.

After picking up a MOtorola NIC that comes with WPA (98 is w/out it and Linksys says find a 3rd party supplier for it) I have no issues or problems anywhere on any machine (4 wired, 2 wi-fi) anymore.

WEP is squirrly for me and anyone can d/load a passkey cracker easily on the 'net. I'm sure the WPA ain't bulletproof but it sure made my life easier than w/ WEP.
