Incompatible RPC stub?

Mar 15, 2004 10:47AM PST

I am receiving periodic error messages, headed either "VBScript" or "Internet Explorer Script Error". They both say the error is "Incompatible version of the RPC stub." They both specify a line number for the error, but the line numbers in the two messages are different. Both also cite a URL that begins "mcp://C:\ ...", but the VBScript message puts the path in a sub folder of Program Files and the Internet Explorer message puts it in the folder WINDOWS\TEMP\MCU80A3.TMP\.

The first message comes up when I try to access McAfee Security Center, making it impossible to use it (although each of the individual McAfee programs are running properly). The second message comes up during certain operations involving Internet Explorer.

Any suggestions on what might be going on ... or what to do about it?

One possible cause is mentioned in http://www.kbalertz.com/Feedback_320108.aspx

It says some application installed XP versions of some libraries. The mentioned article on the mskb http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=290887 lets you download the vbsetup that contains the right versions. I didn't check all of this.

Searching for "incompatible RPC stub" on google gives much more hits. This is just one that looked interesting.

Hope this helps.

1. The error issue concerning Incompatible version of the RPC stub may be caused by any program that has installed different versions of the Oleaut32.dll, Olepro32.dll, Asycfilt.dll and Stdole2.tlb files (and possibly others), which can create a mixed file version environment with files that are not compatible with each other as explained in the article [Q321915]. Supplemental reading:

a. "INV: Invalid Page Fault in OLEAUT32 When You Quit Microsoft Internet Explorer (Q259737)."

b. "Office Automation Fails with an Incompatible RPC Stub Error (Q32010Cool."

2. Please read through the TechNet article concerning the tool, "Version Conflict Manager."

3. Use, but understand fully the section titled, "Using System File Checker" in the TechNet article "Chapter 27 - General Troubleshooting" concerning the use and troubleshooting strategy with this utility. In addition a very good article on the TechAdvice site is "SFC." Heed the warning described in the article "System File Checker Tool Extracts Incorrect File Versions (Q192832)."
