inastallation directly on cd/dvd

back in the late 90s a buddy borrowed ma a PC game(fifa98/99 I'm not sure) that could have been played directly from CD(no installation required) now my question is: Is it possible to make such CD/DVD (for programs,games,etc) I am puzzled by it I have never seen anything like that before or since and I cant find anything about that kind of installation online.Please help.

It's quite possible to run an .exe file from another device than an internal hard disk. Let's see:
- floppy
- networked drive
- cd
- dvd
- USB stick
- external hard drive
- memory card
Everything, in fact, that gets a drive letter when connected to a Windows PC.

Of course, the program must be suitable for such a way of being ran.

This would be a good discussion in the right forum but today, asking folk to boot from CD or the developers to avoid a hard disk install could be as acceptable as a screen door on a submarine.

Many machines don't have drives and with more and more to a web install, maybe a pure run off the web is next.
