Inactive shortcut icons

Hi - When I click on a desktop shortcut icon, the application refuses to start. Sometimes I get the hourglass - forever -, sometimes it will just show the arrow cursor, sometimes it will open the application but then freeze up. Everything is running extremely slow. Have gone back to another start up date, defragged, done most of the things I know to do.
Ideas?????? Thanks so much-

Oh - Windows XP op

I've done several scans with BitDefender and MacAfee. Nothing seems to show up. Suggestions?

Cavcat, Go to the link below and click on "LNK (Shortcut) File Association Fix" to download a zip file. Download the ZIP and open it. Extract the REG file to your hard disk and double click it. Answer yes to the import prompt.

It may correct the problem.
