In World of Sex Movies, High Def Could Be a View Too Real

From NY Times:

The XXX industry has gotten too graphic, even for its own tastes. Pornography has long helped drive the adoption of new technology, from the printing press to the videocassette. Now pornographic movie studios are staying ahead of the curve by releasing high-definition DVDs. They have discovered that the high-definition format is accentuating physical imperfections in actors.

This issue has floated around a lot...

...and I can't help but feel that the flurry of interest a bit disingenuous: to me, it seems that people are using the allure of porn to generate more traffic.

It's not that this isn't interesting, but I think a bit of a false analogy is being made between the Betamax/VHS situation and the current Hi-def one. Firstly, the internet is by far the dominant medium of pornography these days, so which disc format has more porn doesn't necessarily guarantee its success. Secondly, while film was obviously the only reason someone bought a VCR, given that gaming systems are driving next-gen formats more than anything else, the success of the PS3 and 360 needs to be factored in.

Still - I think it's good that such an enormous but hidden industry is being brought to light. If nothing else, it might force people to deal with why porn is so huge.

I will go ahead and put myself in the hat to do some serious and in depth research on this issue. All I need is an HD DVD machine, and a buttload...well err, a plethora of High Def movies to make my evaluations.

I will also need a groundswell of support for my scientific research as I do have my doubt that I have the personal charisma and/or influence, to convince my wife of the worthwhile and necessary sacrifice I am making here, and my completely altruistic effort.
