Re: Linux versus Windows

Windows programs don't run on Linux, and Linux programs don't run on Linux. Most of the time you'll be able to find satisfying alternatives. Not always. Games are a notable exception.

A special category is Windows compatible malware. Those don't run at all in Linux and you won't mind that.

3 PC Linux network

I have a four-PC Linux network. Linux is made for networking, so you won't have any technical problems there.

Linux is a very different operating system to Windows. It's just as easy, but it does things very differently, so you will need time to adjust. It also depends on what you do with your computers; there are Linux equivalents to most Windows programs, but obviously if you depend on a custom-written Windows program you might be stuck.

Maybe give it a try using some virtualisation software - if you can get everything running smoothly in the virtualised Ubuntu on all three PCs, then go for a real install.

Mandriva

Try Mandriva is really easy to use, perhaps better than Ubuntu or Kubuntu. I have been using it since Version 7 (about 2000). It has the best Multimedia support with the larges repositories.

What makes Windows better than Linux? One thing, hardware and software manufacturers write programs for Windows more than anything else. The excuse is, the larger market share they want to reach. If you go to the Mandriva website, they sell systems preloaded with Mandriva Linux.

Linux can do about 98% of anything. I keep a dual boot computer with MS for the fact of some programs that I use that has no Linux Equivalent ad sits most of the time idle in the house.

Try installing Firefox and as a Mail Client, Thunderbird. they are both MS and Linux equivalents.

To be honest, my son, when he was 10 he found Linux easier to use. Just because you are used to an OS does not mean that is easier. My mother in law (65+ years old) came from the MS XP world and in about 6 months, I have not heard anything from her, she said that is easy to use and so far, no lock ups at all.

As far printers, stick with HP, they have the best Linux support, for Video Adapters is nVidia, they have Linux drivers.

Another thing that is tops is Licenses, you can install Linux as many computers as you wish.
