Trump administration mulls changes to trade deficit calculations: report

U.S. President Donald Trump’s administration is mulling changes to how it calculates U.S. trade deficits in a way that would likely help bolster political arguments to renegotiate key trade deals, the Wall Street Journal reported on Sunday, citing people involved in the discussions.

The main idea being discussed is whether to exclude “re-exports” from the calculation of U.S. exports, sources told the newspaper. Re-exports refer to goods that are imported into the United States, then transferred to another country.

Trump has been highly critical of trade deals including the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) with Mexico and Canada. By using a metric that widens the trade deficit, it could give him political leverage to make sweeping changes, the paper reported.

Although they complied with the request, the newspaper reported, the staffers explained why they disagreed with the approach.

There are many products

that have multiple levels of re-import/export situations during manufacturing and then having the finished product land in one country but have sales in other countries. Because of those levels there are countless jobs lost during those various processes not to mention economic losses. That situation is what ultimately has led to severe flaws in the 'free trade' agreements that were made....companies around the world found the loopholes in it and took advantage of them. Clinton, GWB, and Obama all had the law available to them to renegotiate NAFTA and none did........but the loopholes and companies moving out of this country began in the early 1970's without a trade agreement and nobody ever bothered to think far ahead of it to see what the consequences would be for the USA.

Re: consequences for the USA

Well, Microsoft and Intel and Apple and IBM made a lot of money (and a lot of jobs) from being able to sell their products world-wide.

Now think of a situation without 'free trade'. Then we would all have Siemens and Philips and Bull computers and software in Europe, and all Chinese would have Chinese stuff and all Japanese would have all Japanese stuff, and Microsoft and Intel and Apple and IBM would only be a fraction of what they are now for lack of market and sales. That's not what you call a 'great America'.

America next? How Canada curbed foreign workers and hobbled its meat industry

Trump has pledged to protect manufacturing jobs by ditching what he considers unfair trade deals, pressuring companies not to make products outside the U.S., and building a wall on the Mexican border to keep out undocumented workers. Citing a terror risk, he banned visitors from Syria, Iran, Iraq, Sudan, Somalia, Libya and Yemen. The restriction was overturned by an appellate court panel last week, but the president vowed to impose a new ban and make good on his promises to limit foreign workers.

Such moves aren’t likely to create more jobs for Americans in U.S. meat plants, according to David Swenson, an economist at Iowa State University in Ames. He estimates three-quarters of the workers at processing plants in Iowa, the largest pork-producing state, are immigrants, mostly from Mexico. Domestic workers probably won’t take those jobs, he said.

“It’s damn hard work,” Swenson said. “Historically, they have depended on those folks.”

It's absolutely disgusting to hear the spin

from the liberals who lump 'immigrants' all into one category when there are TWO types....those who come here LEGALLY (via green cards, visas, or H1Visas) and those who enter ILLEGALLY and are the most destructive to our economy by taking jobs (I'm NOT letting the employers who hire them off the hook here) not only from other LEGAL immigrants but also other minorities who are citizens.

Saw a news report yesterday about how 'immigrants' were protesting over Trump's temporary halt and many actually got FIRED for not showing up at the jobs they HAD. Are they better off now than they were a few days ago? IF they came here to WORK, why weren't they AT work? They weren't in any danger of being deported (unless they were criminals) so what was the point of the protest?

You keep claiming he banned visitors from a list of countries that BO himself said weren't safe countries, but refuse to acknowledge that it was (and will be again this week) a TEMPORARY HALT from countries that don't have a central government and NO records on the people coming.

Did you know that we DO allow well over a MILLION LEGAL immigrants to come here EVERY YEAR? Why should we invite ILLEGALS that we know NOTHING about to also show up and take advantage of the others (natural citizens and legal immigrants alike) and our Government? Apply and show up like you should and we have no problem.

At least get the story right.....and to say that "PROBABLY domestic workers (who are those workers exactly?) won't take those jobs" is a pretty vague and unproven statement considering how many US citizens and LEGAL immigrants are still out of work. The same has been said by liberals for years about housekeepers both in homes and hospitals, nursing homes, etc., gardening/landscaping, and other non-skilled work is pretty demeaning in the tone used to describe those jobs (they ARE honest labor type jobs) and it says volumes about how liberals look down on those workers as not good enough for anything else. Do liberals believe they aren't 'smart' enough for anything else? It seems that way since they encourage that attitude every day.

I have a hard time accepting the hypocrisy of the left since the credibility level has dipped so low.

AND

I have a hard time accepting the hypocrisy of the RIGHT since the credibility level has dipped so low.

RE:and to say that "PROBABLY domestic workers (who are those workers exactly?) won't take those jobs"

Domestic workers = "American Citizens"?...

Since, what some refer to as, "illegal immigrants" have these "jobs" It would make one wonder WHY the "illegal immigrants" even had the jobs in the first place.

Any suggestions?

Poor Working conditions?...Low wages? Rich employer (Trump) working the system/under the table?...Illegals are more productive workers? I could go on.

THEY didn't hire themselves....There is SOME American Citizen on the sidelines carrying out THEIR nefarious deeds.

- Collapse -
As I said....

the employERS are to blame for hiring the illegals for less, taking jobs from the legal immigrants and US citizens, and they should be punished for it. You keep repeating what I have ALREADY said as if you need re-confirmation from me with every post you make. Do you honestly believe that the radical left SPONSORS who are PAYING the protesters to show up in the streets aren't using illegals? You only seem to focus on Trump for something he did years ago when thousands of businesses were doing the same thing AT THAT TIME. There is nothing to indicate that he has done this in any recent years so that's old news already....it was brought up during the campaign and discarded as such to everyone but you. You speculate about 'poor working conditions' and 'more productive'....but have no proof of that. As for 'rich employer working the system' and 'under the table' and 'low wages'....yes, to all three of them BUT only IF you can find the illegals who actually will accept those conditions; there is also proof on the records that many of them are 'on the dole' from local, State, or Federal benefits and have NO interest in finding work and many more are gang members, drug dealers, killers, and thieves.

Do you honestly believe that the radical left SPONSORS who are PAYING the protesters to show up in the streets aren't using illegals?

First, a person would have to believe in "paid protesters"

The “paid protest” lie: The Trump White House is trying to delegitimize public protest

With a hand from Fox News, Donald Trump is arguing that anyone who protests against him is in it only for money

FOX News?...the source of TheRUMP's.... Sweden can you believe it story?

Figures don't lie, but liars can figure?

Not with you. I don't

Your last sentence is ridiculous....First, the figures 'estimated' will ALWAYS be different from what turns up in reality, and second, who is lying? MULLING is nothing more than that. Stop trying to turn 'thinking about something' into 'doing it'. Until you can figure that out, you have nothing to say of import.

RE:Your last sentence is ridiculous....
Ridiculous?

Carroll D. Wright was a prominent statistician employed by the U.S. government, and he did use the expression in 1889 while addressing the Convention of Commissioners of Bureaus of Statistics of Labor. But Wright did not claim that he coined the expression [CDW1]:

The old saying is that “figures will not lie,” but a new saying is “liars will figure.” It is our duty, as practical statisticians, to prevent the liar from figuring; in other words, to prevent him from perverting the truth, in the interest of some theory he wishes to establish.

RE: Stop trying to turn 'thinking about something' into 'doing it'.

YES!!!! You're right...I forgot I was talking about POTUS Trump...He NEVER thinks about the things he does.

Explain to me

how well thought out was Obamacare, the Stimulus, Cash for Clunkers, the auto bailout (that cost the US taxpayer tens of millions in lost revenue via the stock 'we' owned, the Iran deal, the Benghazi lie, the BO laugh at Romney over Russia, etc? Dems have had 8 years of not being able to think ahead and the consequences of their actions.....you're already condemning Trump after 30 days, JP....even over stuff he HASN'T DONE. And you wonder why liberals have no credibility anymore.

- Collapse -
RE:how well thought out was

EVERYTHING Obama did was "well thought out", compared to what Trump is doing, by the simple fact that Obama went about what he wanted to accomplish and kept a low profile AND OFF Twitter, raving like a looney about the "fake news", his "popularity" and whatever else that pops into his head...His inauguration was the largest ever...His majority was the largest ever...It stopped raining while HE was giving HIS speech at the Inauguration...CRAP like that...

I've said it before...SHUT HIS CAKEHOLE!!!!!

- Collapse -
And EVERYTHING BO said

and outright lied about in over 8 years, if you count his campaign time, WAS crap, JP. He didn't think about ANYTHING other than what he could do to destroy our Democracy because he personally didn't believe in it.....that's why liberals are so far to the left today, and why they all need crying towels now.

BO accomplished much in 8 years, most of it bad for our country, mostly without Republican support and mostly because anything Republicans in the House came up with never made it to a vote in the Senate thanks to Reid, mostly because BO would threaten ahead of time to veto anything from Congress that he didn't like, and mostly because he did his 'lawmaking' using EO's and bypassing the legislative body completely. As long as liberals want to throw around the 'dictator' word, they need look no further than BO himself. BO didn't need to use Twitter to message to the people, JP....he had the entire liberal news media to do that for him.....he personally preferred going on talk shows like the View, Oprah and Ellen where nobody would ever confront him on his TOTAL CRAP SHOW.

I'll give you a complete list of Trump's Presidential accomplishments so far in 32 days when my source site updates itself with a transcript from last night. Then we can compare BO's first 32 days to it. Perhaps you'll have something to actually debate about then.

"They're ignoring President Trump's accomplishments -- which we will go over tonight -- in 30 days. Now, they're never going to tell you, the American people, the truth. They have a clear radical left-wing agenda.
And by the way, they're also lazy. They won't report that Trump has ordered federal agencies to ease the burden of ObamaCare and seeks to repeal and replace ObamaCare, that he took action to freeze new and pending regulations. He withdrew the U.S. from TPP, like he promised. He instituted a government hiring freeze. He banned, literally, you know, some countries from getting funds that provide abortions abroad, issued five executive actions advancing Keystone and the Dakota Access pipelines, which, by the way, will create jobs and lead to energy independence. And also, he issued actions on construction of a border wall, stripping money from sanctuary cities  -- all promises -- issued executive actions on extreme vetting -- he'll win that eventually -- also issued executive action on rebuilding the military.
He issued executive action to draft a plan to defeat ISIS, which should probably be in his hands today or tomorrow. He instituted a five-year lobbying ban for administration officials so he can drain the swamp. He nominated an originalist to the Supreme Court, Neil Gorsuch. He signed a House joint resolution, number 38, to help the coal industry get back into business, sanctioned Iran over their ballistic missile program, negotiated lower prices on F-35 fighter jets and Air Force One with companies like Intel -- with Boeing and others. Then, of course, he met with Intel, Ford, General Motors, Fiat Chrysler and all these other companies to incentivize them to come back into America and build jobs here. And of course, his economic plan will also help with that.
He signed executive orders to protect police officers that are under fire.  He signed executive orders to target drug cartels. He launched a council for the advancement of women entrepreneurs. He called or met with over 30 foreign leaders so far. And Trump made a big announcement today by appointing Lieutenant General H.R. McMaster to be the new national security adviser."

to the 'hesitation' marks where Hannity clarified that he would 'go over tonight' the first 30 days....or you can't comprehend the English language and only interpret it the way liberals notoriously do. If you noticed that part then surely you noticed that he DID go over the list a mere few minutes later and not '30 days later' as you interpreted it. His show is one hour long and he covered the topic in the first fifteen minutes of it, including the list of accomplishments. You must live a very lonely life since you complain about everything, including a link that broke here at CNET when it was pasted. The ACTUAL link I COPIED was correct so why in the world would I have to pass your piss test by looking at every single piece of code of a link to make sure ahead of time that it pasted correctly? In case you don't know this, when anybody (including you) pastes a link in the body of a post, it DOESN'T appear as an actual LINK UNTIL AFTER YOU HIT THE SUBMIT POST button so it's NOT clickable. So you stupid demand isn't even based on reality here.

You've really become pretty demanding over the last year and gone really downhill with that crap in the last couple of months....maybe it's time for some extreme vetting here at SE or at the very least, take on the methods of some other forums.....somebody posts something and a Moderator reviews the post before it actually gets approved and shows up for replies (and even the replies are treated the same way).

Perhaps 'snowflake' JP needs a puppy or a crayon now...........

who owns CNET doesn't approve of anything said by Michelle ****** and keeps filtering it out.....Not my fault. When I hit the SUBMIT button, the link actually showed up correctly, but now that I have closed out SE and come back to read your replies, her last name again is filtered by stars so the link breaks off. IF you are really interested, you could do the following:

Right click my link as is, choose COPY, then Paste it into a new tab address line, and manually change the starred portion after michelle- to be ****** , and then hit Enter. You will actually get to the correct page.

BUT you don't take direction well, even though to have plenty of it to dish out for others, so I don't expect much. (As for who do I think you are.....that's not a topic SE would allow me to answer)

What the Lord's prayer has to do with Trump's Presidential accomplishments I have NO idea...

you will see the word 'transcript' in it......all you had to do was scroll down one click and you would see the entire Hannity show transcript that has the list of accomplishments that I DID actually cut and paste for you here previously. YOU are the one that asked for the link, JP....I provided what you asked for and now you're complaining again just because the HEADLINE wasn't what you expected. Get a grip already...

Yes, laughter IS the best medicine.....it's even sweeter going down when you get the last one, like I just did over your post.

I'm assuming you aren't interested in having a REAL debate over anything because nearly all of your posts in this thread are complaints geared toward ME rather than substance because you STILL haven't showed up to show ANY of BO's accomplishments in HIS first 30 days in office in 2009 in order to compare them with Trump's. IF you can even FIND a list as impressive, let me know.
