impossible to activate Lavasoft Ad-Aware Free

by groucho7 / April 8, 2013 11:07 PM PDT

Lavasoft is making it impossible to register and activate its freeware. You can try any number of times, configure your firewall, try anything, you will not be able to register and activate Ad-Aware Free. You will keep getting the message "Registration Failed."

I sent an e-mail message about this to Lavasoft Support. They answered me a few hours later telling me to insert my license key in the program. Of course, the freeware has no license key. Only the paid version does.

Their message told me to call their U.S. support number 1-888-448-6881 for further assistance. The line quality on this number is terrible. I heard a recorded message saying a live person would answer me in 30 seconds. This message repeated itself every minute. They wasted some 15-20 minutes of my time on this wait. Finally an employee named Victoria answered me and wanted to know my order number. Of course, only the paid version has an order number. The freeware does not.

Victoria wasted more of my time making me wait on the line, and then told me that a technician would call me back in 30 minutes. Of course, nobody has.

Lavasoft is dishonest. It is doing everything it can to make you buy the paid version of their software. The freeware is only a trick to get you to do so.

Ad-Aware Free
by Carol~ Moderator / April 9, 2013 1:02 AM PDT

I'd like to begin by saying, I completely agree with Bob. It may be time to move on. Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and SUPERAntiSpyware are both excellent substitutes. And they both offer FREE versions.

Having said the above, if you feel the need to continue with AAW, please read the below:

"How to activate your Free Ad-Aware Antivirus program". Keep in mind, you haven't shared with us which version of AAW you wish to install. This applies to Ad-Aware 10.

According to the above:

"If you have chosen to activate Ad-Aware Free at the end of your trial instead of upgrading to Ad-Aware Pro, than the following activation steps need to be taken in order to maintain your level of protection and to continue receiving definition and software updates:..."

Additionally, read the below thread titled "Registration Failed!" at the Lavasoft Forum:

If all else fails, you might want to consider registering at their forum and asking, as the two posters did in the above referenced thread. I'm under the impression an activation code or license key is required for the free version. I may be wrong.

Best of luck..

Why think like that...

It was clear that only the paid version got support. If you dealt with "freeware" before they all offer or point out no support is forthcoming, you're on your own. Limited support maybe present on some company support forum if available.

As Robert suggested Lavasoft is getting old in the tooth, I would move on. You hardly hear/read anything mentioning Ad-Aware anymore even if effective it's limited. So what's the main reason for all this, just because its free. If so, try something else and go with it. Review the "sticky" post here and check the many references or further review some other posts here for ideas on what's good to try and/or keep. good luck

I had the same problem but it turns out that you have to write your e-mail in the name box and your name in the e-mail box. I received the confirmation from Lavasoft inmediatly Happy
