Importing from Scanner

I have Windows XP SP2 and use a Dell 924 All-in-One Printer/Scanner.
When attempting to import scanned images into certain programs (e.g.Paint Shop Photo Album / Ulead Photo Express etc. ) I get an error message -
?.... (name of program) has encountered a problem and needs to close ?. The Program then shuts down.
I can scan images from the Dell All-in-one Centre into these Programs without difficulty but when working from within the Programs themselves I cannot use ?Import? or ?Acquire? or ?Select Source? without the Error Message and shutdown.
