Importing Favorites to I/E

by Harv / March 20, 2004 7:36 AM PST

I had to have my O/S reformatted and the repairman backed up my Favorites files among others. Favorites files were downloaded to one labeled Windows(?), from where I moved them into My Documents. For some reason, I cannot import them. I have very little understanding about the working of files, so I don't know what I'm doing wrong. Anyway, here's what I did:

Clicked Browse under window labeled Import From a File or Address. Opened to site entitled Select Bookmark File showing My Documents in Save In. File Name showed Bookmark. Are ALL files in My Documents bookmark files? I highlighted the file I wanted to transfer (Health) and clicked Open tab, then Save tab.

Received this comment when transfer failed:
Cannot find C:\Document and Settings\xp\My Documents\Health\bookmark.htm. Please choose another file. What am I doing wrong? Sad

It sounds like you did the correct procedure for "Importing", but the file may be a different name of location. The default "save" and "Import from" locations are in the "My Documents" folder. The default name will be "Bookmark.htm". That's why it's looking for that file name when you attempt the "import".

It is possible to save the file to another location when doing the original "Export". Try doing a search for the "Bookmark.htm" file name. If you can't find that file name, then it's possible to have saved the file as some other file name. (If you know that it was named "Windows.htm", then try searching for that file name.) If you can't find that file, start by searching for all files with the .htm file extension. When you find the file, you can double click on the .htm file and it will automatically open in Internet Explorer. You can verify whether it's your original group of Favorites.

When you finally identify the correct location and file name, you should be able to "Browse" to it when doing the "Import".

Hope this helps.

Thanks for your help, Grif. I was unable to find those files in any of the places you mentioned, so I just clicked on every file, and manually put each of them into I/E Favorites. It took less time that way than puzzling over their original locations, since they were scattered all over in folders, subfolders, My Documents, My Computer, etc, after these backed up files were reinstalled. And, I also had to slog through the Administrator/Owner files too to find them.

Then, I had around 27 applications to reinstall after this was done. Good thing I had the repairman backup my important files, even though it cost more. But, still it has taken me about three or four days of around-the-clock toil to get back up to speed before my computer crashed. Happy
