iMovie question

Dec 27, 2007 4:29AM PST

Hello all,

I have a question about iMovie'08.

Is it possible to extract a photo from a movie project?

In other words, can i pause a certain movie clip and extract a photo from the paused clip?

I hope i have not confused the readers.

any help would be appreciated

thanks in advance

you can... not sure about the current - there have been so many complaints about it... perhaps the same command is available in 08... when you are on the frame you want, under File, select "Save Frame"... or...

Maybe this helps...

Still Frame
Dec 27, 2007 7:38AM PST

You can do it but it is not as good as it is in iMovie 6.
As you suggested, the best bet here is to download iMovie HD (6) and use the Save Frame function from that.
I have not used 08 yet but I did fire it up to check this problem.

Thanks boya84 for the link and all other responses.

I downloaded iMovie HD from apple's website. I had made one movie in iMovie'08.

But the iMovie HD doesnt recognize it. So i wanted to use the same movie which i made in iMovie08 to open in iMovie HD but it doesnt.

Infact none of the clips which show up in iMovie08, show up in iMovie HD.

Is there any format thing to be done here?

thanks again for the responses

K

(and Happy new year to all of you)

It is probably the LONG way
Dec 30, 2007 3:17AM PST

because I usually have a knack for discovering the long way, but... I presume there is no "Save As.." in iMovie08 that allows saving in a previous version...

In iMovie08 with the project you want, can you "Share" or "Export" out to "Full Quality"? If so, this should export to a QuickTime movie that maintains the hidef format... Quit iMovie08.

Launch iMovieHD 6 and drag the recently saved Full Quality (HD) QuickTime file to the Timeline. Then "Share" or "Export" to the camcorder.

And... perhaps don't use iMovie08 any more... or until the replacement version/update with all the features we like/need comes out...

(... and a happy, healthy, fun and prosperous 2008 to you and yours!)

and I can say I prefer iMovie HD. HD is much easier to navigate on (for me). On the new version of iMovie, some of the features seem to escape me, and I spend a lot of time hunting them down. I've used HD more of course, but at least all the features I need are right in front of me in the window.

I know you can extract photos with iMovie HD, and why, a Best Buy employee who sold me a new camcorder even mentioned it to me, since I asked him about Mac compatibility with the particular Sony I got. Of course, I had to buy a case and tapes separately, but what really annoyed me was the FireWire cable wasn't included and they had none in stock, go figure. Lucky for me, there's a local computer shop right around there, and they had a compatible 4-pin to 6-pin cable. Anyway, with HD, you shouldn't have a problem. Why Apple decided to make a new version of iMovie that is much worse, I don't know. The new iLife suite is okay, but not great. iPhoto is the only thing that was improved for the best in my opinion.

Hope HD works for you.

iMovie Problem
Dec 28, 2007 10:11AM PST

I was trying to create a movie with photos from a trip down the Colorado River. Somehow I?ve created a project file on my desktop I can?t erase and it?s almost a gig. I wanted to take a different approach to making the movie, perhaps sending it to iMovie after creating it in another application, like Garage Band or iPhoto.

After closing it and putting it in the trash, I try to erase the trash and I get a popup that says the files are lock and can?t be erased. I can find the files that I pulled into the project that are locked and unlock them however it still won?t erase the icon and the attached 800 Meg.. I?ve tried several approaches with no luck. Does anyone know how to get rid of this file?

Thanks!!

Hmm... I recommend

repairing permissions, unlocking the file itself, if it is not, and like you have said, unlocking all related files and keeping them that way.

It's fixed

I took about 20 Min. with an Apple Care rep to get-R-done but the file is gone. I wish I could tell you all exactly how we did it!! We had the install disk in using disk utility, we opened in safe mode, we played with permissions and we used Terminal with a line of code and dragging the file into the terminal window to get it to finally delete. Actually I using Terminal is what did it. Don?t remember the line of code?sorry. One thing of note was when I started in safe mode a folder with some very strange files turned up in the trash with the file that couldn?t be erased. Both the folder and the file had to be changed via Terminal before they could all be erased.

Thanks again for your help!!

Perhaps those "strange" files were preventing deletion

Terminal is pretty handy to have around. Gotta love UNIX and OS X too. Good to know that you got it fixed.

I think this could help.

In Leopard, and maybe in Tiger, I think you can press alt+empty trash to delete all files regardless of permissions or if they are locked or not. Have you tried deleting it this way? Hope this may help.

Still can't delete the iMovie Project file
Dec 29, 2007 11:39PM PST

First of all thank you BMF and R. Proffett for your help!!

I?ve tried everything that was suggested, however I couldn?t find anything that would help from the link. I?m sure something there?s but I must be doing something wrong.

I also tried deleting the files from the other application (iPhoto) that I put them in and then tried to delete the file no love!!

I think I?ll try deleting them from the HD and see if it still looks for them. I?m not sure what else to do. If this doesn?t work I?ll call Apple care on Monday and see if they can help.

Thanks again!!

Good idea.

Call AppleCare and see what they recommend or take it into your local Apple Store. I'm wondering if the ownership permissions are locked up since I believe I may have run into something like this before. It could be the system that has a problem.

I suggest that in iMovie, you should check the trash, and maybe even remove some files within iMovie if possible. Keep us posted.

I forgot something
Dec 30, 2007 7:06AM PST

I forgot to say that the file I can't remove would also not open. So empting to trash in the project is not possible. Good thought though it would at least make it smaller.

(NT) Can you compress it or manipulate the file at all?

Did you quit iMovie and iPhoto and GarageBand...
Dec 28, 2007 12:40PM PST

and not just close or minimize those application's project windows... and at worst, you restarted the machine, then attempted to trash the project... I'm SURE you did. Wink

If that did not do it, then repairing permissions would be the next appropriate step...

Another way - if the low resolution is OK
Dec 27, 2007 11:04PM PST

@ 72 DPI is to take a screen shot at the paused frame... command-shift-3 for the whole monitor window or command-shift-4 to select a specific area... then crop it if needed...

I know this is an older thread but...
Apr 26, 2008 12:32PM PDT

I won't go into all of my troubles but here's the jist of things:

I love my quicksilver 800 dual apple.. I recently updated to the Tiger and bought IMovie HD 6.0.2..

With the first version of IMovie I would make small animations with low-rez jpegs from photoshop. It was slow and choppy and when I'd bring it back to the camera and play them on the television the quality would be low. It was an early attempt to try and find a frame by frame animator software. I was hoping that IMHD6 would have corrected some of these bugs and advance. It has.

What I want to know is this: When importing frames or Iphoto docs you can only lower the frame rate to 00:03 which is 20 fps. Thats too slow for what I'm attempting. I want either 00:02 (at the least) or 00:01. Is there a way to do this?

Then, (now here is where I get confused).. If I can take my Canon HV30 and import DV @ 30p or even 60i,.. and be able to manipulate it, then why can't I do something with individual frames at less then 00:03??

Does anyone know a way to take (let's say) a one minute segment of 30p video and quickly break it down into individual frames? like this create still frame feature but as a whole to the entire clip?? if it were to break down my vid into 30fps or 60 fps i could then manipulate those frames and reassign them back to their original slot.. and run my cartoon that way? Oh yeah i'm trying to do a little cartoon.. please no one say flash!!!!!

Anybody, please help!!!

Try this
Apr 26, 2008 11:17PM PDT

I used a still camera to produce what essentially is a stop motion video.

With all the stills selected in iMovie, set the duration to 0:03 (30fps approx)

I did find that if I wanted to do it more than once, I would have to delete the iMovie preference file before it would successfully go down to .03 again.

I don't know of a way to split the frames, like in strip of "real" film but I know there is a piece of software that will select a set number of frames from the direct input of a video camera. (Connected via Firewire)

Perhaps another way to produce this cartoon would be to take individual frames with your camera.

Of course, you may be asking a little too much of a piece of, almost, free software.

Good luck.
