iMovie 08 backup

Dec 18, 2010 8:20AM PST

I'm trying to backup my iMovie events to a LaCie external hard disk because they're taking up all of the space on my MacBook. Right now, my only option seems to be to create a project of the events (which have several clips that must be dragged individually) and export them to a movie (which will take a long time) and drag the movie file to my external hard drive. Is there an easier way to do this? I am running Mac OS X 10.5.8

Put all the clips that make up the events

into a single folder and then just drag the folder to the external.

Put what in the folder
Dec 19, 2010 1:31AM PST

What am I supposed to put in the folder. If I put the events in the folder then they appear as several clips, not one large one.

I tried that, actually, and iMovie wouldn't read off the external hard drive.

Again, I'm running 10.5.8 with iMovie 08.

Thanks!

Reason why iMovie might not "read off the external HD"

Make sure the external hard drive you're using is formatted to Mac OS Extended (journaled). Otherwise iMovie might not be able to read and write to it.

Drag and drop within iMovie event library
Jan 1, 2011 3:08AM PST

iMovie will organize your video on which ever hard drive you tell it to. Try this: when you plug your hard drive into your Mac, open up iMovie and tell it to show all the hard disks that are connected to your Mac (do this by clicking on the hard drive icon located at the top right corner of the event library column in iMovie). Then, in your event library, select the events that are on your Mac's hard drive and drag them to the external hard drive shown in your event library list.

Of course, simply dragging them will move the events to the LaCie hard disk (which, by the way, seems like a good option for you since you're running out of space on your Mac). If you want to copy them to the LaCie try holding down the Command key while you drag.

DISCLAIMER: I have not done this myself because I have an alternative backup solution. Also, I am only familiar with iMovie '09.

Answer from iMovie help menu:

If you want to save space on your computer's hard disk, you can move your stored video in your Event Library to a compatible external hard disk connected to your computer with a FireWire or USB 2.0 cable.
You can also copy Events to another hard disk. You might do this, for example, if you want to create a duplicate copy of your video library or an Event on a friend's hard disk.
NOTE:When using an external hard disk with iMovie, make sure it has been formatted as Mac OS Extended (Journaled).
To copy or move one or more Events to another hard disk:

Connect a compatible external hard disk drive to your computer using a FireWire or USB 2.0 cable.
In iMovie, click the Hard Disk button to see all available hard disks listed in your Event Library. The button is located in the upper-right corner of the Event Library.

Select the Events that you want to move or copy, and then do one of the following:
To copy the Events, drag them to the icon of the hard disk where you want to copy them.
A copy of the Events remains in the original location, and any projects using clips from the Events still refer to them at their original location.
To move the Events, hold down the Command key as you drag the Events to the icon of the hard disk where you want to move them.
The Events are moved and deleted from the original location, and any projects using clips from the Events refer to them at their new location.

First response
Jan 9, 2011 1:51AM PST

Thanks. Although the first response would certainly create a backup of ashankar365's iMovie events, it would not solve his problem of running out of space on his internal hard disk (which was the reason why he wanted to create a "backup" in the first place). Instead of copying the events folder, moving the folder in which iMovie maintains video events to a different location and telling iMovie to maintain the library in that alternate location, might provide a more scalable solution for ashankar365's video library moving forward.
The first response would have left the events in their original location and would not have freed up any space on the internal disk.

How to do this?

How would I "move the folder in which iMovie maintains video events to a different location and telling iMovie to maintain the library in that alternate location"

Read the above post titled "Answer from iMovie help menu".
