IMDb photos

Jun 18, 2004 5:19AM PDT

I wasn't really sure with forum I should post this query in, but I chose the browser forum since my problem relates to my internet browsing.

For some reason, when I visit the Internet Movie Database (IMDb), the photos in the photo galleries do not load for me. I have no problems with any other images on the IMDb, including the thumbnails gallery.

When I click on a thumbnail of a photo, all the images on the next page EXCEPT the photo in question loads up. There is no broken image icon, but there is a blank space where the image should be, which looks to be just the right size for the photo.

Here is an example page from actor Colin Firth's gallery...

http://www.imdb.com/gallery/ss/0335119/Ss/0335119/girl_pearl_01_300dpi.jpg?path=pgallery&path_key=Firth,%20Colin

Where the image should be (from the movie *Girl With the Pearl Earring*), there is nothing but a blank space below the words "Images of Colin Firth" and above the photo's copyright info. Again, every other image on the page loads up fine, as did the thumbnails on the previous page.

I have yet to come across anyone else with such a problem, and the IMDb people seem as confused as me, and speculate it might be a problem with my Internet Explorer 6 settings. I looked at my settings, and can't see where the problem might be, and I've never had a problem with images on any other web pages.

This is a very confusing problem. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks ahead to anyone who replies.

Re: IMDb photos (their web page code.)

http://i.imdb.com/Photos/Ss/0335119/girl_pearl_01_300dpi.jpg shows the image fine, BUT the web site is doing very odd things with TABLES that may trip up some browsers or even popup blockers.

To wit, I had no trouble with Mozilla, FireFox and have no popup blocker or any other item like than installed since with those browsers its not needed.

My bet is that IE 6 could have issues if a popup blocker is installed or IE is damaged.

Try another browser.

Thanks for the response Bob!

I do use Pop-Up Stopper (Free Edition) at the moment, but I've had the IMDb problem when I havn't have any such programs installed. I even just uninstalled it to check, and there was no change.

As for using IE 6, the IMDb gallery photos are not important enough for me to change browsers. I'm used to IE 6, and haven't had any other problems with it. However, I suppose there could be a problem with my installation of IE 6 that I don't know about.

I will mention the tables thing to the IMDb people though.

They did that strange thing on purpose.

Since I know why, I'll tell. It's to stop people from right clicking and saving the image. It's an effective trick to stop that, but as you can tell, I was able to find the image anyway.

The problem I see with it is that any number of IE issues can make this web page fail.

As to not wanting to change from IE, the issue is simple. IE is a "target" of malware writers taking shots at Microsoft. You get to experience the pain of the issues.

Don't look at http://www.mvps.org/winhelp2002/unwanted.htm and my advice today is...

Move out of the line of fire between malware writers and Microsoft. Use another browser...

When someone else goes to the IMDb and views a gallery photo, what happens if they right-click and try to save the photo. Do they get a pop-up warning like I see on other sites, or do they just end up saving a dummy file (mptv1.gif). I've been able to right-click and save every other image on the IMDb (aside from the gallery photos that I can't get to appear).

And what exactly did you mean when you told me NOT to look at the link you provided? Were you making a joke that I'd be shocked by what I read. Happy As it is, I often check my system for spyware and viruses and the like. I know it doesn't mean I'm safe, but I've been online for over six years and I've never had any problems so far. Here's hoping! Wink

Anyhoo...

Well, it's IE

Came through on IE6 loud and clear. I had SP2 for a week and couldn't take it anymore. I'd rather delete trojans. My security setting are all over the map. Somebody is always complaining about my settings, mostly about cookies, but they're only middlin' secure. You can use Firefox, I liked MYIE2 before it became Maxthon, Avant is OK. Slimbrowser ? Try them all. I had 4 going once including Opera
