Question

iMac OS 8.6 Web Browser Dilemma

Jan 13, 2012 8:52AM PST

- Someone gave me an iMac with OS 8.6
It came with IE 4.51 for mac, which is not compatible with many website.

- I tried to get Cabsilla for OS 8.6, but it came in a .sit file

- To uncompress the .sit file, I went to Stuffit to get a stuffit 7.0.3 expander .dmg file

- When I double click the .dmg file in the iMac, it does not know which program to use to open the file

Can someone tell me what web browser I can use for OS 8.6, and what are the steps to install the file on the iMac, given the above scenario

Answer
I'm afraid that what you see is what you get!

System 8.6, while good in its time, is no longer supported by anyone.
IE 4.5.1 came as standard and the problem you are running into is that the internet has moved on but IE 4.5.1 has not.
It just cannot handle the new internet.

Thanks but getting iCab is just 1 of 3 steps

Thanks for the reply,

However, as mentioned in my original post, basically I have 3 steps to cross
1) Get a compatible browser (in this case, the icab.sit) file
2) Get a Stuffit expander (in this case, the Stuffit 7.0.3. dmg) file to uncompress the .sit file
3) Get the OS 8.6 to recognize and open the .dmg file, which unfortunately, does not

I guess the iMac will go into some electronic recycler.

Opening a DMG file

8.6 will not recognize a .dmg file as that is an OS X thing.

You need an old version of expander to open iCab which is a .sit file

go to this website and download a very old version

of expander.

http://home.earthlink.net/~gamba2/tidbits.html

Right click the file to download it.

It is an .sea file (self extracting) and will give you the chance to download a later version that still supports System 8.6

Any compressed files that you try to download must have the extension of sea, sit, bin or hqx

DMG is not going to cut it.

Of course,

you could always take that machine up to OS X 10.3.9, if it met the required specs, but you would still have the browser problem.
