Do as suggested, and when that stops working, get a new computer. That is often the sign of a bad cap on the logic board, and eventually it will fail completely. If your current system is serving your needs adequately, then I'd suggest just sending the sleep command twice and so on until it gets to the point where it won't go into sleep mode at all. But replacing the logic board out of warranty, and that's one of the original Intel based iMacs so pretty much guaranteed to be out of warranty long since, will be cost prohibitive. Wait until it fails or gets so annoying it's worth buying a new one.
